Today I added some gypsum directly to the area that has been selected as the furture site of my world record pumpkin. I plan on having enough space for at least four plants next year and have begun making an attempt at collecting what I think will be great genetic crosses. For SURE the patch will include the 1450 Wallace. Other seeds I am looking at right now: 1062 Ford = 1231 Pukos X 998.6 Pukos 662.6 Spearing = 998.6 Pukos X 1231 Pukos 522.4 Spearing = 1231 Pukos X 998.6 Pukos 1470 Wallace = 1502 Wallace X 998.6 Pukos 1566 Rodonis = 1450 Wallace X 1231 Pukos Of course the: Jutras 1689 = 998.6 Pukos X 1225 Jutras But I'd be happy with the: Jutras 1306 = 1450 Wallace X 1068 Wallace Richards 1468 = 998.6 Pukos X self Pukos 1180.5 = 1068 Wallace X 998.6 Pukos Leonzi 1107 = 998.6 Pukos X 1446.5 Werner Privitera 1096.5 = 1068 Wallace X 998.6 Pukos Privitera 893 = 998.6 Pukos X 1068 Wallace

11-02-2007 My compost pile. This was about two dump loads, one leaf and grass, the other fresh manure. It's composted down to about one load and is about half finished. I have been turning it weekly and last week I mixed two gallon of molasses with 50 gallon of water and soaked it down with that.

11-02-2007 The pits are located on top of a slight slope. The trenches are dug downhill which should help with drainage from the pit location.

Another view . This plant is GIGANTIC. I am having problems with some rot near the basil crown. Today I poured a little peroxide on it and some Captan. If it doesn't look better tomorrow I'll try alchohol. If that doesn't work, I'll drown my sorrows in some Alchohol .

I'll more than likely cut the main on the 1306 in a day or two. As hard as I have tried to stop this it's just not happening. I've used alchohol, hydrogen peroxide, bleach and captan over the past ten days or so and it just keeps getting worse. There is no rotting odor and the rot seems to be contained to this small area. I might be better off cutting it from the vine to keep the problem from spreading. This entry should have been submitted on 7-28.

Major bummer . This morning there was another foaming spot on the main of the 1306 closer to the base. I was hopng I could remove the basil crown and leave the first two secondaries but once I made the cut the foam was up in the area of those vines. I removed the first two secondaries, the one on the left side of the plant was 20' long with tertiary vining so I'm probably gonna lose some growth due to it's removal. Once the vine was removed I loaded it up with Captan fungicide. After I removed the secondary I had a brain fart. Should have severed it and left it go, maybe got another small pumpkin off of it. It was very well rooted.
Wednesday, July 30 View Page
The main roots were large and long. The longest one went out about seven feet from the base before I broke it. Most of them were approximately three inches deep and ran along the top of the soil. It was still pencil size at the break so it could have went on a long way. The soil where this basil crown is located is very loose, well draining soil that is at least 18 inches deep. This is the only pit I dug and filled with compost in the fall, the pit was 24" deep minimum.
Wednesday, July 30 View Page
The secondaries which were pulled also had lots of nice rooting at each node.

Put 50 gallon of "super tea" on the plants this morning. Hopefully we'll have some nice gains tomorrow morning because of it. This was my last recipe and allowed to brew for 48 hours. 55 gallon of water 12 handfulls of Bull Country Compost 4 handfulls Chicken compost 4 handfulls Garden Fert compost 32 ounces mollasses 16 ounces kelp concentrate 16 ounces humic acid concentrate 1/4 pound soluable Mycorrhizal fungi On this batch I also added half a bag of the new Epsoma product that Neo told us about, "Bio-Tone". The scale settled on 823 pounds at the OVGPG weigh-off in Canfield, OH. The 1306 Jutras seed is now known as the 823 Perry = 1306 Jutras X 1450 Wallace. This pumpkin beat my personal best set last year at 608 pounds by 215 pounds. :) A Big Thanks to everyone at OVGPG who make it happen!

I took the pumpkin to a local paumpkin farm for display Nick A Jack Farms. Nick A Jack is very interested in holding an annual weigh-off. The pumpkin made my home town paper "The Independent" in Massillon, OH.

My tomatoes did very well at the weigh-off and not only took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, but also broke the previous Ohio state record by a mere .06 pounds. My largest tomato weighed in at 4.48 pounds and now holds the Ohio State record for the heaviest tomato ever grown in the Buckeye state. The 2nd place tomato weighed in at 3.36 pounds, the 3rd place tomato weighed in at 2.99 pounds. The 2.99 actually weighed 3.17 when it was picked. It was harvested over two weeks prior to the weigh off so it had lost some weight.
