Germiniztion has started. (I hope)
Small growing area, I decided to go with plants with cut main vines, side vines than just having one plant grow. I will have genetics that can compete with the best seeds out there. Oh Yes I Did.
1354Checkon x 820Beauchemin
1236Harp x 1055Jutras
1055Jutras x 1236Harp
243Beachy x 730Dill
820Beauchemin x 598Swarts
Outstanding genetics, Oh Yes I Did.
Now they have to grow, especially the 243, 7 years old. Thats the plan today.

Bad germenating luck, 4 of the seven did not sprout. I read if there is no sprouting after 10 days start some more seeds. So, 1469Checkon will replace the 1354Checkon, 689Beauchemin will replace the 820Beauchemin, 1003christensen will replace the 730Dill, 1059Vincent-McGill will replace the 243Beachy. Back to the germination dungeon I go.

"WANTED" dead squirrel, my 1055 Jutras and 598 Swarts got ate, tore up by a squirrel, I will also throw in one wife, I told her do not feed the squirrels, they will keep comming back for more food. My plants were outside adapting to the weather. Moving right along, 751Mudd and 1187Jutras are now soaking.

Put up 4 hot houses, wind shelter. No tops, just for wind break. You know you always have people asking for plants that grow well in hot weather, well these plants out there with no roof grow great in cold weather, ye hah. Alot of plants in small area (me) Have you ever heard the one, "White man build fire stand back, Indian make fire stand close" I'm not wasting a bit of garden space. (laugh)

Damm the torepedoes, the war has began. 3rd straight day of something eating my plant, this time it ate most of one cot leaf and holes in the other, it also ate right thru the third leaf, will it still grow. Last night I put a air tight cover over the top, it still ate the plant. I had no choice but to spray some bug killer on it.

Sprayed some malation on my plants to kill any vine borer eggs that may be on them. All the talk about vine borers flying by got me thinking I don't want to wait to long like last year and loose a plant to vine borers. My 1185Kline is at about a foot long for the main vine, only it is going sideways, I'm slowly turning it.

Took down some of the plastic surronding the plants, one has a 2 foot main vine and it is about to run into the plastic. Used shish kabob shishers (what ever they are called)to hold them down. I fed them, just as I was doing a last check a big fat bug landed next to the plant, it looked like it was a vine borer moth. I sprayed with malathalion.

Rainy, highs in the mid 70's, lows in the 50's, plants need the sun. I have had two main vines go left instead of straight, one is going straight back instead of forward. One plant looks like I gave it the stuff head hunters put on heads to shrink them, it is small, all this rain and no sun is not helping.

Plants are groing great, perticularly the 1185Kline. 751Mudd is growing slow, 1ft main, the plant I want to pollinate it with is 4ft, will it make it? that and I still have to bend a main that is 1ft long and back and off to the side, I hope it makes the turn with out me breaking it.

Went to pollinate this morning and the lobes were deformed looking, there was enough room for a quarter of a flower to pollinate with, would not fit a normal flower, lobes were big and puffy. And it had something else growing in it that I did not recognize, when I'm absolutely sure it did not take I will post pictures.

Good news bad news, steped on half a main vine on one of my plants, it will probably stop growing, it kind of does not matter because the plant is being grown for its pollen, then to be pulled, if all goes well. I attempted to pollinate the pumpkin yesterday, I had to make the flower I used to pollinate with a 4th the size it was, in a few days I should no if it got pollinated. The patch is wet, rained, downpoured most of yesterday.

Pollinated pumpkin looks like it has gotten a little bigger, only it might look like it could be getting soft, or it is not going to grow. I bought some sand and a quarter yard of compost, I'm running out of dirt to burry the side vines. I had a vine borer keep landing on my plants, so I took a hand ful of compost and whipped it at it, it flew away. I was also burring vines and a rain storm broke out, I decided to call it a day.

Boo boo & boo again, I went to double check to see if the pumpkin flower was open today and it was, I had planned and thought it was opening tommorow. The plan was to pollinate with a 1725Harp flower, I ended up using a flower from the same plant because I did not have the 1725 flower yet. So, I have one polinated with 1725, only on both pumpkin flowers the flower hole is really small, a fourth the regular size. The other with 1185Kline, the lobes were a perfect 5 lober. I will save a side vine pumpkin if neither of the two on the main don't grow.

Since then I have 1185Kline x self, it is growing great (good anyway)1003Christian that has two main vines and looks like a octopuss will be pollinated by the 975Kline if all goes well, I also have two more ready to pollinate on the 1185, will pollinate in case something happens to the one going so well now. The 224 Brouillard x 751Mudd is growing, not fast but is growing as far as Ican tell, I have one more I want to pollinate on that one also, 224 is full of 898Knauss and opposite cross of 898Knauss. I trimmed some plants around the pumpkins today, almost done with burrying side vines. roots are growing everywhere, a good sign. I fed my world famous fish emulsion (one one pound fish in blender, strained into a gallon jug, filled with water,, seaweed from oriental store 3 1/2 onces dried in a oven until brittle, put in blender, strained, fill with water, one cup of the mix to a gallon, and presto wamo, I used a one pound Talapia fish the othere day and it seemed to have better response from the plant then the local caught fish, I will have to experiment more with this.

For some reason the 224Brouillard pumpkin does not look like it took, so I pollinated another and probably will yet another. The 1003Christiansen plant is for orange. I was holding my haved over the flower, alot of bumble bees buzzing around me. The 1185 and the 224 both did not take on the first pollination.

I did a dumb thing, cut the vine off with a pumpkin I pollinated this morning, I have three going on the plant, anyway, two are mostly for if something happens to the one that I have had for 6 days, I was clearing some leafs out of the area for one of them, and a vine I did'nt realize it was a thin side vine with pumpkin, "OUCH", what a dumb mistake. I have a pumpkin set on my three plants, the first one on 2 of the plants did not take, find out if the 3rd plant will take the first soon. Watered, fed, cussed and smiled.

I moved my stump cover that was keeping my stumps dry and I saw fras, sure enough, I ended up cutting my stump in half, pulling out 3 vine borers, I also found a few more on that plant. I then found under a vine comming from the stump a split vine, I was'nt sure if it had vine borers because it was underneath, so I cut it off. I must of cut a third of the vines, leafs off the plants. Now to see how much it slows the pumpkins gains, hopefully not more than half. Next year traps.

Live and learn from expierence, I found some vine borers, I was so mad I yanked the whole vine, then I realized I could of just taken the vine borers out and let the vine heal. I was even thinking they look alot like grub worms you fish with and I was thinking of taking them and fishing with them, taking the fish and making fish emulsion, and tell the vine borers it just makes me smarter.

240 ott for a weight of 300 pounds, I broke my personnel best this year, success. My orange 1003 christensen that I crossed with the 975Kline is looking orange, weight about 100 pounds, 224Brouillard is at 100 pounds also. The 1185 has some small splits that is leaking water so I'm slowing down on watering.

1185 that weighs 307 has got 5 or 6 splits, big enough for liquid to seep thru, I have slowed down on watering, the gains have slowed also. I think this happened when I was gone for six days and we got 12 or more inchs of rain. I heard if you water before the poring rain starts it would'nt be as big a shock to the pumpkin.

I think if I had been able to water some before we had a week straight of rain it would'nt of been such a shock to the pumpkin and it would'nt of split. Today is day 40

No monsters in my patch this year (just wait tell next year) only these scary little things. I'm forced to pick my remaining pumpkins, onw is for the genetics, the other for the orange. I grow at a community garden and somebody is vandalizing other gardeners pumpkins, cabbage, and they kicked my orange one, a shame because it is starting to get more and more orange, and the heck if they are going to steal mine. Tommorow if the pranksters don't do something tonight.

Pumpkin grew in 75 feet and was picked a month early, due to kids damaging and taking from the community garden.
