Decisions...so many great seeds out there! Not that I have all of them but I have a few! What I really want to do This year is raise a great squash. I was growing a Vincent/Mc Gill last year and it measure about 350 pounds and the next day it was flat. A mouse had eaten through the bottom side and though I had noticed it wasn't gaing any weight I didn't know I had been Pumpkin Molested!
It has been three seasons since I started with Bigpumpkins and growing giant vegetables. The first year was the easiest and I got the most giant vegetables although my largest pumpkin was 288 pounds. The next year I had a pumpkin and a squash at 500 pounds each and they blew up. This year has been another disappointment. I tried to grow nothing but my own seed and I grew a 260 and a 250. I was so disappointed that I did not take them to weigh-off. Had I they would have placed forth and fifth. Already I am planning what I can do better next year! The main problem I have had to date is excess rain. We have had ten inches per month and some months 10 inches per week! The roots are so shallow that they do not go deep after the nutrients. I have worked on the soil condition for five years 2 longer than I have grown giant pumpkins and the company which does my soil test says I have the best soil around. I am discouraged! I spend $1000 nto $3000 a year on ammendments and fertilizer and the biggest I have grown is 354 pounds. Oh well. Next year is another challenge and if I can get the greenhouses built I will be able to protect my plants from excessive rain water! Thank each of you for reading this and I trust each of you will accomplish a new personal best is 2011!
What I would like to accomplish for 2011 is a large squash as well as a large pumpkin. I am working to make that happen. Ammendments are being made and in the spring I will soil test and ammend again! Grow em Big!
