Patch tilled for 2010 season. Test germinating 6 of our 331's from last season.
Saturday, May 1 View Page
Nothing in 6 days-0 for 6 on the 331's. Not soft or moldy so burying them outside in the flower pots. Hope the "real" ones fare better! 722Privitera08, 941Leland06, 1287Gansert09, 1183DeBacco09, 718Gerchy08, 1101Toftness07, and the ?Reynolds08(965Ottone x 1689Jutras).

722 and 1183 popped and are moved to pots with seed-starter mix. Also put some seeds directly in starter mix inside greenhouse. 2-998Bowles, 1-1085Bowles.
Monday, May 10 View Page
3 of the 331's came up outside after 2 weeks. Only the Reynolds seed popped in the chamber. Moving all to starter mix. All 3 greenhouse seeds directly in the mix sprouted also. Lucky to have backup plants if the others don't sprout soon (already been 1 week in the chamber). Last year we used the chamber and the 90degrees and 65-70% humidity made 100% success rate?

?Reynolds08 transplanted to patch on May 25. We gave the 3 weakest looking seedlings some extra greenhouse time so they might catch up to the stronger ones.

998(#2) transplanted to patch May 25.

Hoped for better after 6 weeks of very nice weather. 7 plants in patch. 4 of the plants look ok, 1 is so-so, and 2 are not growing at all.
Friday, July 2 View Page
722 doing ok.
Friday, July 2 View Page
998(#1) is the best of the 4.
Friday, July 2 View Page
1183 is growing very tall. Trying to compete with the giant marigold plants we put in for natural insect-repellent.
Friday, July 2 View Page
1085 also doing ok.
Friday, July 2 View Page
331 is very small, but growing. The other 998 and Reynolds plant just won't grow.
Monday, July 12 View Page
Sunday 7/11. 722Privitera looking good. Last year we couldn't get any significant side-vine growth but this year they actually look like real plants! 1st 10ft+ female aborted before flower even opened for pollination.
Monday, July 12 View Page
Sunday 7/11. 998(#1) filling out nicely. 1st 2 females over 10ft also aborted before opening.
Monday, July 12 View Page
Sunday 7/11. 1183 looking great. Continuing unlucky trend with 1st 2 females over 10ft aborting before pollination.
Monday, July 12 View Page
Sunday 7/11. 1085 looking good. Turning main away from plant on opposite side. Last year, with terrible (wet) weather all pkns were set by July 14-15. The plants are much healthier looking now but no fruit will stay on long enough to even attempt pollination yet.
Monday, July 12 View Page
Sunday 7/11. 331 still moving at 4-5 feet now. No females yet=no losses!
Friday, July 16 View Page
First one for 2010 is a four lobe on 998 side vine. Vine was already terminated so if it takes- there won't be any stem stress! Pollinated with 1183.
Friday, July 16 View Page
First main vine attempt is on the 722. Nice four lobe female pollinated with the 1085 (which was 24% heavy).
Sunday, July 18 View Page
998 side vine fruit. 3 days old. Been icing down since pollinating on Friday. Also attempted first main vine set on this plant this morning.
Sunday, July 18 View Page
722 main vine fruit. 3 days old. Also icing since Friday. We like the looks of this one and hope she sets.
Wednesday, July 21 View Page
Main vine pollinations: 7/20: 1183x1085, 7/21: 1085x1183, 7/21: 998x1183(2nd on main), 7/21: 722x998 (also 2nd on main). Also doing multiple side vine females in case the ones on the mains don't take.
Monday, July 26 View Page
Day 10 for the 998 side vine fruit. First one to survive to the 10 day mark: 20cc, 50ott. Plant still has 8 fruit (5 controlled + 3 open).
Monday, July 26 View Page
Day 10 for the first fruit set on the 722 main- there's another one 5 days younger 2 ft. down on the main that also has this nice shape. The 2nd one will be culled if the numbers aren't as good: 29cc, 68ott.
Friday, July 30 View Page
1183 fruit reaches day 10: 31.5cc, 81 ott. Culled the 2nd pkn off the 722 today-the first one is "the one".
Saturday, July 31 View Page
1085 fruit- Day 10. 32.5cc, 80.5ott. Looking good unkadan!
Thursday, August 5 View Page
Day 20 for the 722Privitera: 70cc, appx. 107 lbs. Going real well, although 1085 and 1183 main vine fruit are younger and growing faster.
Sunday, August 8 View Page
Watched BES develop today on 1183(day 19). Treated w/fungicide, dried, and sealed with silicone. Gained 30 lbs in last 2 days (14 Fri, 16 Sat)but 6"rain a few of days ago probably doomed it. Still have a side viner on here that was supposed to be a sink- it might be the keeper by the end of the week-lol.
Monday, August 9 View Page
1183 day 20: 70.5cc, 129 lbs. She gained 15lb again today but she's doomed. Now we're afraid to cull it and blow up the fruit on it's side vine. Good news is the 1085Bowles did 24.5 lbs today without blowing up! Day 20 measurements to be taken for it tomorrow. Fingers crossed unkadan!
Tuesday, August 10 View Page
D20 for 1085 fruit. 72.5cc, 129.5 lbs. Last 2 days were actually 23.5 lb combined- not 24.5 for 1 day-sorry. Can't believe it but the 1183 put on another 10 lbs today.
Thursday, August 19 View Page
1183x1085 done at day 30. Stopped at 205ott (192 lb). Walls were nice and thick near stem- but blossom end split was getting soft. Saved about 100 seeds for experimenting.
Tuesday, August 24 View Page
1183x998 D-33 for side vine fruit that was supposed to be a sink. 208 lbs today but getting birdbath shape at blossom end.
Tuesday, August 24 View Page
1085x1183 D-34. 223ott (243 lbs). Still has good shape and appears healthy. Hoping it gets to 500 for a pb.
Tuesday, August 24 View Page
722x1085 D-39. Right at 240ott (300 lb). Largest pkn is on the smallest plant- go figure. I think this is a twin to the 722's mother(1041.5McKie)-too bad it will only weigh 1/2 as much when we harvest it!
Tuesday, August 24 View Page
We have a cull all loaded up for the local fair Thursday, but steering the truck with the front wheels off the ground will be tricky. Never thought we'd have one so big, so early. Any hauling tips from the heavy hitters would be greatly appreciated!
