For any of the newer growers, this is what you do not want to happen. Notice how the pumpkin is almost sitting on the main vine. I tried to move it a little every day, but the shoulders were growing fast and kept pressure on the vine.
You may notice the stem starts to split from the vine a little.

These are some mucho nacho Jalapeno's that I started. My wife came up with the Walmart clear plastic container idea. It works great, carry it outside if the weather is nice and back in for night. If it is a little cool you can just crack the lid open and you have a minnie greenhouse.
We got the 3 inch plastic containers at the dollar store (4 for $1.00) and they should last forever.

I was up at 3:30 am Sat morning thinking about what was going on with my first batch of seeds. So I got up at 4:20am and went to check them out.
Here is what I did wrong ...
I had mixed some Espomo bio-tone fertilizer with beneficial bacteria in with my promix. What was I thinking !, I new better. I guess since it was a mild dose of (4-3-3) I figured a little would not hurt. Well it did, it killed a few seeds. Must have been high in salts because when I dug a few seeds up out of the promix, the root grew about 1.5 inches and then dried up.
I should have experimented with that stuff when I did some trial runs over the winter.
Lesson learned !!
I did throw out the starter mix, and mixed up a new batch of straight pro mix.

The 696 Holder has sprouted a root this morning.
I also got a very big surprise yesterday evening when I checked on their progress. Some of the seeds that I thought were ruined because of my mistake, suddenly sprouted ! Last Sat. morning when I dumped the pots (with the starter mix I tainted) and got the bad seeds out, I soaked them in some water for a few minutes to try to rinse them and maybe rehydrate the dried up root.I never thought it would help them because they were so bad.I wish I took pics to show just how bad they were. After they soaked in the water a while I put them into some new starter mix.I put a special label on them saying "restart", so I did not get them confused with my other 648 I started. To my surprise, the 837.5 Pukos and the 648 young came back to life. They are both up and looking good.I think I may put both 648's in the same hoop and keep the stronger one.

In case anyone is tired of spending $$$ on tomato stakes that rot in 1 or 2 seasons, maybe give these a try. 10 foot pcs of plastic conduit, 89 cents each. Cut them in half, now you have a 5 ft. stake that should last many years and cost much less than those wooden stakes.
I used them to hold my fence up this year .

I am thinking they were needing more water. I still have a few in pots and they did the same thing so I don't think it has any thing to do with them being out of the pots.

This is a pic of the 763 Young. All this congestion growing from the bottom is causing a lot of problems. I have never seen leaves growing from the bottom of the vine like this. That kept the main off of the ground about an inch and my first secondary vine kinked when it touched down. It is now cracked open on both sides. I put some captan on it to try to dry it. I will cut it off if I see any problems. Some of the large tendrils were also acting as kickstands. I trimmed them off also.

Oh yeah, as of yesterday, the 763 is now out of the hoop house.
I also did a soil drench this morning for ants with bayer. I found tiny bits of yellow dust sitting on top of my main vine. It was exactly the same color of the main vine. My guess is that the bigger red ants are chewing on it somewhere. Yesterday I saw a red ant carrying a yellow piece of something, but didn't think much of it. I will have to spray tonight so the next time they take a nibble it will be the last.

Two of my melon plants got open pollinated afew days ago. Probably selfed because of the distance between them but not sure. They were the 191 Holloway and the 183 Neptune. They are around 5 days old and a little smaller than a 12 oz can.

I was trying to adjust the main in advance on the 889 Sundstrom so my next pollination would have a good vine position and snapped it.
Note: Don't touch vines until after noon. When will I learn this.
At least I have one set before the break and one ready soon before the break.

I terminated the main on the 763 Young at roughly 25 foot, and terminated 3/4's of the secondaries on it. Three pumpkins are pollinated on the main and a few on sides just in case.
Growth on the first pollinated fruit is slower than other growers that are growing this seed. I am watching #2, and 3, and should have one to go with in a week or two.

The 648 Young is looking great. This plant does not get leaf burn like the 763 does. 1st female should be ready around 10 ft out. I will be extra carefull not to snap this main !!
The 696 Holder is vining out nice. The new main is around 8 ft. I don't see any females yet.
The 700 and 270 Young plants are doing good. They are in my vege garden and I will be pulling the 700 out in a week. I only have room for one flag pattern here, around 215 sq ft. The 270 looks a little healthier, bigger main and leaves. Pics soon...

Here is the 191 Holloway. This pic was taken on the 21st, so I would estimate pollination on the 19th. So I am saying it should be 5 days old. Earlier today I posted it was smaller than a 12 oz can, but it is already bigger than that. I am surprised how fast it is growing with such a small vine.

This is the 889 main that I snapped this morning. The night before I was adjusting it and heard some of the fibers breaking so I stopped. This morning I noticed that there was some oozing where it must have fractured. I am sure it would have healed if I would have left it alone, but I didn't .
At least it is broken in front of 2 fruits.I will have to do a pitchfork pattern with the remaining space I have (7-8 feet).

696 Holder took some wind damage with those big leaves today. I am out of equipment for wind breaks so the 696 and 648 are unprotected.
Notice how the left secondary is as long as the "NEW" main.
Anyone who has broken a main can figure out why this plant looks the way it does. lol

I can see roots close to 15 feet from the stump !!!
We got close to an inch of rain today, hopefully fruit #1 won't blow up.
I think I will only put 3 plants in this plot next season, I would prefer to grow these plants bigger.

The rib splits that I found yesterday morning are now all the way into the cavity. The splits seem to be where a sag line was developing perpendicular to the ribs.I actually see a third split starting on the very top. I will probably cut it open this weekend for my daughters b-day party.I think I will cut a hole in the top and let the kids have fun getting the seeds out of it. Yesterdays ott was 370 inches (1060 lbs est.)at day 52.

I think I actually got another one set on the main about 30 feet away from this one, finally. I had 5 or 6 aborts between them on the main vine.

I decided to patch the 3 rib splits with silicon on Monday morning on the 763.( Thank you Sergio!!) If it will hold together a few more weeks I will get it weighed as dmg.If it makes it to the weigh off I will take the patches off and see if it healed when I get there. So far it seems to be ok.

The 191 Holloway taped at 72.9 and weighed in at 72 lbs even.
It was my first year growing them and enjoyed them. I learned a great deal and will grow them next season.

This is a pic of a leaf that had some pm under the overlap in the back of the leaf. I found a lot of leaves with pm starting to grow in that hidden area.I switched the overlap so that the pm was now on top. Then I sprayed 3% peroxide directly on the pm and rubbed it off with an old tooth brush. I don't know if that is the best way to try to stop it, but i read about using peroxide to fight pm on a organic website. So far it has dissapeared from the leaves that were infected.

I have been having issues with vine rot on my 763 plant this week. It was not getting any better so I decided to cut the main off from the stump side of the fruit. In the pic you can see that the entire vine between 2 different secondary junctions was all rotted. It was full of nasty, cloudy water . I am hopeing that it will stay out from entering the fruit.I have around 100-150 sq ft of plant out in front of the 763 to keep feeding it. I saw some new sap balls on the skin of it so maybe it is still growing a little. My main goal at this point is to keep the fruit from rotting, I really don't care if it grows anymore , but any growth would be a plus :)

Todays numbers: Aug. 16th
648 Young - day 40, 280 ott, 467 pounds, 16 pounds a day last 5 days. This is my best shaped fruit.
696 Holder - day 40, 296 ott,550 lbs, 15.5 lbs/ day last 5
889 Sundstrom - day 51 , 350 ott, 900 lbs. 14.5 lbs/ day
763 Young has not rotted yet. It looks like it has put a little weight on since the splits. I am now thinking that the splits may not be the reason for the sudden growth stoppage, I am sure that the rotting vines have played a big part.
Day 67 - 185.5 " circumference, 379 ott, 1139 pounds. More orange and more cantaloping happening.
Some notes for July : put on 889 pounds on in July
averaged 28.7 pounds a day in July
40 lbs/ day the last 5 days in July
before the splits
A lot of rain before splits
(2.5 INCHES)

It seems to be happening on several of my plants. I have not been using my overhead system because of some minor pm issues, but I am going to restart the overhead watering today.

Smashed my personal best by 955 pounds. Fruit is now the "1157 Zappa 2010 dmg". Unofficial I guess. Fruit was only around 52 days when it stopped growing on Aug 1st.It may have put on a few pounds after the split, but I think the stoppage was from the infection in the plant. Either way, this pumpkin could still be growing if not for the infection.
As stated before, it put on 889 pounds in the month of July. It was pollinated on june 10th, about 9 foot out.350 feet of plant behind it, about 150 feet in front of it.The 5 days before the splits it put on a average of 40 pounds a day. 2 days after the splits I noticed the infection starting only 2 feet behind the fruit on the main vine/seconday junctions. It kept getting worse day by day.About 2 weeks ago I cut it from the main on the stump side and 2 days ago I cut it from the remaining main in front.
I am going to keep it on a pallet covered with a tarp, hopefully until October.
If it has seeds they will be free to growers some time in November. It was selfed, so it should retain the same great genes as the 763 Young.

I taped the 270 Young x 763 Young (1385 Jutras x 1502 Wallace)this morning. This is the 270 sq ft flag pattern plant. Pollinated on June 22nd. only 7 ft out.
Day 66 - 315", 659 lbs. 10 day average is 10 lbs / day.
This plant has been my easiest to maintain mainly because of the small size, but I am not getting the crazy non-stop 3rd stage growth like my other plants have been sending out all season. Maybe because the root system is smaller.

Even though this plant (763 Young) was suffering from some sort of vine rot, you probably would not no it from this picture. This is one aggressive plant that I will definately grow next year. It has been putting out 3rd stage growth all season and still is . Since I cut the main from the fruit several weeks ago, I am letting it do what it wants. If I have some spray left over I will use it on this plant, but that is all. I have several nice fruits growing on this non stop plant. It actually looks to be my healthiest plant !

Stem end of my 856 est
This fruit was crossed with my 772, which was very orange, and has orange genetics behind it. I believe the 648 seed that produced this 856 had some good orange genes also. This cross should produce orange offspring.
I will probably plant this one next year to maybe get a heavy orange fruit.

One,of my 2 entries heading on the scale.
Weight was 772 lbs.
My first official GPC weight.
A few people asked for seeds from this fruit. I just want to state that it was crossed with my 1157, so I don't think it will produce orange as well as my 856 seed should, (if it has any seeds).

I can't remember this guys name, sorry, but he had the biggest wheel I ever saw. He drove 6 hrs or more from NY to bring his fruit. He got 3rd place. My kids probably could have taken a bath in that thing !

This is the stump from the 763 Young plant. Even though this plant came down with some kind of smelly bacterial infection, it never totally died. It kept on growing . I let some more fruits get open polinated to see if any would grow for decoration pumpkins. A lot of them were seeping that nasty liqued ,like some of the vines were , so they ended up rotting. I managed to get one around 150 pounds, as I have in a upcoming photo.
