Last day of this germination test 9 days after starting the seeds. It is amazing how much the starts grew intwo days since my last post. Taking everything into account, I think this first test was a success. In a few days, I will start another test run in with a different starter mix and some mycorhiza mixed in to see how that impacts the size of the root ball.

I was pleasantly surprised that the tilling went well and the soil was not full of clumps etc. when I finished due to all the rain we have been getting. Amendments included bone meal, coffee grounds, epsom salts, soundgrow, compost, sulphate of potash, and a little chicken manure.

The temps have been in the mid to high 40's at night here in Western Washington so the heat lamps may be a good idea.

The three plants at my house this year are the 1579, the 1467 Perham, and the 1236 Harp for my first serious year of growing. I have learned a lot since last year and put in some time and money so now I will get to work and hope for some results.

I would like to send out my condolense to my friend Cindy in Little Rock for the loss of her plant last week. I made a stupid decision last Thursday and now I know exactly how she feels. I left my house at 6:00 AM on Thursday to drive the 300 miles to Spokane Washington to pick up my son from Gonzaga University for the summer. It was cool and cloudy with no sign of any sun. I opened two cloches and left one closed due to the poor way I set up the door. Turned out the sun came out and when I got home at 7:00 PM, the plant in the closed cloche, the 1579 Revier was cooked! I felt horrible but another lesson has been learned and I have moved on. I replaced the 1579 with an 851 fowler back up on Saturday and will hope it does well.

Things are moving slowly forward up in the state of Washington this year due to the cold wet weather we have been having. I didn't get around to installing soil heating cables so the lack of a heat source at night is not helpful with the cool temps. Here is an update on the 1467 Perham on 5-22-10. We got back from spending the three hotest days of the year at the ocean and came home to find the patch in need of a lot of work. Everything had grown about 18" but I also had some sun burned leaves to take care of. The person house sitting tried to keep everything cool but was unable to leave work during the day to spray down the plants. The good news is that the two polinations I did right before we left appear to have taken. Thanks again to Cindy in Little Rock for the four male flowers off of her 1502 Wallace that made the polinations possible. Here is a shot of the tsump on the 1467. It is my largest plant .The stump is large just like everything else on this plant. Hopefully the pumpkin at about 14' pollinated with the 1236 harp will be also.

Pumpkins are set on all three plants but the 10 day measurements are a little behind all of the numbers I have seen in other grower diaries. Could it be because of the cooler temps out here in the northwest or because the plants are still growing and taking energy from the pumpkins? The PNGPG patch tour is next week and I will ask some questions then. I also wonder if I should be taking off all the imature male flowers now that the pumpkins are set?

I found this longitudinal split in the stem of the pumpkin I have set on the 1355 Bahskaran. Could this be from stem stress or is there somthing that I being in my fisrt year of serious growing don't know about? Help!! I just posted a thread in the new growers forum if anyone can help.

Here is a shot of a similar spit that is a few days old on my set pumpkin on my 1467 Perham. It seems to be healing but I would still like to know how to prevent or treat this. The next post is another shot of the same thing.

This is The 1236 Harp on day 20. It measured 53" and is chugging along at a little more than 10 lbs a day. That is not enough growth at this point to get to get to the size I am hoping for so I am reading and asking a lot of questions to see how I can ramp things up to 20+ lbs per day.

This is my 1236 Harp on day 32. OTT is 207 or about 197 lbs. It looks a lot like the 1725 which I guess would be it grandfather. The size may not seem like much but I will zoom by my PB of 232 from my first year last year today on day 34. The small plant size is the only thing holding this one back. I have another 1236 seed and will grow it again next year with at least 700 sq.ft. of space.

This is the 1236 Harp on day 41. It slowed down to 13 pounds a day the last two days. Hopefully it was because of the cold weather. If not, the small plant size of about 200 sq. ft. may be catching up with it. It has been completely terminated for about two weeks. It sits at 252.5 OTT, 347 lbs.

Here is the best thing I have going, the 1355 Bahskaran at on day #41. This one is perfectly round, is going to be bright orange, and is averaging a little over 20 lbs a day for the last 7 days. I have plenty of new growth on this plant that should keep it going for a while longer. It is at 250.5 OTT, 340 lbs yesterday. I have visions of a Howard Dill award when I look at this one.

Here is my 1467 Perham on day 50. It is at an OTT of 264" or about 394 lbs. It will be the last pumpkin I cut off in a little over a month so hopefully it will keep growing. It has been pretty steady at 12-15 pounds a day for the last 10 days.

I spent Sunday afternoon working on a Tripod to load the pumpkins at my house. All I need to do is attach a come along with some good strong chain and the punpkin lifting harness we picked up and it should be ready to go. I'll test it this weekend lifting a recycle bin that should weigh 300-400 pounds.

This the 1236 Harp on day 55 on Sunday. It measured 285.5 or 494 lbs. This one will be going to the Puyallup Fair on Friday. Not bad for a 246 sq. ft. plant and under 60 days of growth. It will be a new PB for me if it holds toegether. I have another 1236 seed and will grow it on 700 sq. ft. next year. Can't wait to see what that one does.

This is officially the 563.5 Briggs 2010. A personnal best for me by over 300 lbs. The cross is 1236 Harp X 1467 Perham. It came in 16% heavy at 60 days old grown on a 246 sq. ft. plant. I took it off so early because the plant had no new growth in about a month due to space limitations and slowing pumpkin growth. Next year the 1236 will get 600-700 sq. ft and hopefuly it will end up much larger.
