Sunday, January 10 View Page
Have to show the results of what mustard I bought from Ron Wallace did for me this fall. I cut it Thanksgiving weekend and added 9.5 yards of manure and then tilled it in. This is over 6 weeks and we have had some warm weather. Should have added some winter rye but didn't get around to it. But the thing I want to point out is there isn't a weed in site.

Saturday, April 23 View Page
Starting to harden off the plants. These are probably the best looking plants I have ever had at this point in a season. Things I did different thanks to Steve Connolly and Ron Wallace. After germination dropped temp to 70's and used better lighting. I could get T5's so I went with T8's for now. In the pots I used Ron's pumpkin pro and azos.

Curious about the yellow spots and some light leaves. I am using Neptunes harvest fish and seaweed alternating 2 days water 1 day Neptunes. Any opinons would be great.

Monday, May 9 View Page
Beautiful day. plants were a little wilted when I got home from work. Nice shot of neptunes and 2 gallons of water to each. Standing up nicely now This is the 1426.5 lariviere. The right is probably the keeper.

Monday, May 9 View Page

Sunday, May 15 View Page
1327.5 Rea has laid down. and is about 2.5' long. wondering if I should start burying the vine

Sunday, May 15 View Page
1426.5 Lariviere is standing strong. I think It needs to see a doctor because it has definatly been more than 4 hours.

Sunday, May 15 View Page
454 Fleming looking good. Would like to see this get better. This is a third generation pumpkin for me. there are some good genetics in this pumpkin.

While watering everything this morning I noticed some males on my 191 Blair watermelon. I don't even have these in the ground yet. was going t plant them this weekend.

Wednesday, May 18 View Page
And then when I looked closer I saw this one. I know it's way to early and the plant is small and not even in the ground. Just think I'm doing something right this year. Diligence seems to be paying off.

Thursday, May 19 View Page
I culled a 1426.5 Lariviere. It's not a sad thing though because I'm giving to a friend who is going to grow for her second year.

Thursday, May 19 View Page
The chosen one. 1426.5 lariviere. Hoop repositioned. Heat is coming of this weekend. And probably some vine burying.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
Here are todays updates. All my plants have a male flower opening today or tomorrow. Way ahead of the curve for me at this time of the year. Testing some compost tea on test subjects. We are in the warm weather now and the plants put on some quicker growth last night.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
454 Fleming just won't lay down and seems to want to grow in its own direction and has the biggest flower.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
1998.5 Jutras. Still very slow to grow. I think it could be this section of the patch. It's been amended like the rest of the patch but it is not as nice soil on this side yet.

Compost tea test brew. I don't really know what I'm doing just testing things I'm reading.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
Compost tea test subject. It's and extra plant that I Don't know the genetics. It didn't die after yesterdays tea test. And it di look greener when I got home.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
And some more tea test subjects. Extra 2.00 Ellis tomato seeds I don't have room for.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
So when I went to work this morning at 6:30 I watered this plant. It looked good. Got home and no it looks like this.

Thursday, May 26 View Page
This is what is left of the 13' 6" I had going. I don't know if this is enough leaf to keep it going. Time to put the trap out again.

Monday, May 30 View Page
so 2 days into compost tea test the plant was looking really good in the morning. And then not so good when I got home. Trap was tripped and nothing in it and both pumpkin test plants eaten.

Monday, May 30 View Page
The tomatos look good. greened up the net day.

Monday, May 30 View Page
The 191 blair has it's permanent home. If you have any suggestions please feel free to email me. I don't have experience with watermelons.

Monday, May 30 View Page
Pumpkin on the 1426.5 Lariviere. it's about 6 feet out. It will come off though, to early.

Monday, May 30 View Page
454 Fleming. getting bigger and now vining a little bit. Needs some coaxing to go in the right direction.

Monday, May 30 View Page
1998 Jutras. Still the slowest plant. but It's in the spot I chose for the plant to take up the 454's place after it goes to the Marshfield fair. Need to test this spot by it self. It grew the 454 last year and compared to the rest of the patch it is not doing as good as the others.

Monday, May 30 View Page
1426.5 Lariviere. I am really favoring this plant. It has been the best performer until the next post. Maybe would have been different if I had put it in the Jutras spot. It is the first plant with a pumpkin showing. I will pinch that off though. Need the plants bigger before I take off the hoops. there still on right now because I have aground hog to catch. It hasn't realized there's pumpkins in them there hoops.

Monday, May 30 View Page
1327.5 Rea. I am actually liking this plant a little more than the 1426.5. It is almost 8 feet long now and has some small side vines showing. It is in the part of the patch that gets the least sun. Only by a few minutes probably. It is growing faster than the others and looks fantastic. this year 3 of my plants are from big and orange. I hope I actually get a big beautiful pumpkin out of one of them. I'll be happy with big orange and ugly too though. Just be big.

Monday, May 30 View Page
191 Blair. Closer look. I have pinched 3 melons off this already. we got some really good rain today. And it was fertilized yesterday. Things should really pop this week.

1426.5 Lariviere has 2 pumpkins at 8 feet. will remove all soon.

Thursday, June 2 View Page
My 454 looks healthy and is starting to catch up. At 3 feet long it also has a pumpkin. all though you cant see it in this picture. Had to really coax this plant in the right direction.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
Hoops are off. Drip tapes are in and leaks fixed. Note to self take better care of the drip tape in the off season.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
caught 2 more. Youngens. Let them go the same place I let the mother go. Good luck! funny story. I put the first one in a dog cage because I knew there were at least 2. it got out but could get out of the truck bed. The second one I let go in the bed with the other one. 20 min later I come out and it's sitting on the bed rail. Jumped tot he ground when I got close. I got a big bucket and caught it again near the road. Had a thick freezer glove on. People must have thought I was nuts wrestling a baby groundhog into submission. Got them both in the trap.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
Really flagging in the heat. First time getting direct sun. But they all had seven gallons of neptunes and bloom and grow. Front is 454 Fleming, Left is the 1998.5 Jutras, Right is the 1426.5 Lariviere, And back is 1327.5 Rea.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Cucumber beetles and squash bugs have shown up the same day. Starting with seven to try and slow them down. Will probably switch to bonide tree and shrub by the weekend. and we have possible wind and hail tonight. Not in a good mind set today.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
454 Fleming. I have a pumpkin about 8 or nine feet out. Will be pollinating it this weekend. This is my Marshfield fair plant so it needs to be an early pollination.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
1998.5 Jutras. Still the slowest plant in the patch but will have the most space available when the 454 is gone.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
1327.5 Rae. Looking really good. Has a pumpkin about 12 feet out. might be pollinating this weekend.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
1426.5 Lariviere. This is still my favorite plant. It isn't showing a pumpkin on the main yet. There were 4 on side vines. It is the most prolific plant in the patch.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
SVB's showed up around the 13th. I saw one more in the trap today. Haven't seen any flying around.

Friday, June 17 View Page
So I had a visitor today for a patch tour and to pick up his anthesis. He asked me what the crosses were for the chosen plants I have growing. Don't know that stuff off the top of my head. So here it is for the record. My plan is to cross the Jutras into all the others. I plan on 1 lariviere into the Rea and into the 454 1327.5 Rea ----1498 Werner x 979 McMillan 1426.5 Lariviere ----1676.5 Daletas x 2009 Wallace 1998.5 Jutras ----1317 Clementz x 1916 Barron 454 Fleming ----471 Fleming x 2032 Mathison

My 454 Fleming was pollinated 2 days later and is more than twice the size. The difference between these is I put ice around the 454 and didn't do that to the 1327.5

disappointing morning. Finally bit the bullet and cut them off. first 2 pollinations didn't take. Have some more but not as many as I wanted by now.

The Lariviere plant is my biggest plant. It starts right in front of the pumpkin that's covered. My problem is that there are 4 pumpkins pollinated on it. 3 of them are the same size pollinated on different days. I accidently snapped the tip off the main about 6 feet after the pumpkin I want to keep. There is a secondary that is taking over for the main. I'm going to wait a week more before I choose which one to go with.

Sunday, July 10 View Page
2 visits this weekend from local growers. After they both left I went to get the stuff for pumpkin shade I was telling them about. My idea is to not have anything touch the pumpkin this year.

And here is my baby. 454 Fleming. It has put 8 inches on the OTT measurement 3 days in a row. I made it past my day 23 day failure of last year so I'm hopeful it goes the distance. Measurements are cir. 76.5" bs 51.5" ss 52.5" ott 180.5

Friday, July 15 View Page
Also interesting to comment about the 1998.5 Jutras. There is a second pollination that is reacting the same way.

Sunday, July 17 View Page
1998.5 Jutras. Not real happy with the shape but we'll see how it goes. The plant has been challenge from the beginning. smallest plant in the patch, small leaves, really takes a hit in the heat.

Sunday, July 17 View Page
1327.5 Rea is so bright I gotta where shades. I will take a nother picture in lower light conditions. It reflects the sun so much I have to wait for a low light condition.

Sunday, July 17 View Page
1426.5 Lariviere. This pumpkin is my second best right now but I think when I start measuring it, it's going to be the front runner in the patch. nice shape to it. It go to big for the little table so it has it's new shade cover over it.

So I think I'm losing my 1998.5 Jutras plant. It started a couple of days ago. I think it cant handle the heat. I don't see any SVB damage and I don't think it was squash bugs. Been real hot here past few days.

Then these side vines are going light. It looked really good except for small leave up until now.

Thinking about giving up on the 1998.5 Jutras. And what ever happens happens. Pruned it hard of all the bad leaves. Not really sure what happened. And the pumpkin isn't growing nicely now.

So today was a hard decision day for me. I pulled the 1998.5 Jutras. The plant has not done well and the pumpkin wasn't growing well. I thought about growing for ugliest pumpkin but that's not Justice for Jutras.

This is all that's left.

So it was a rough weekend. After I pulled the Jutras plant I went to measure my 454 Fleming. It had stalled about day 30 and day 34 it had shrunk. No back up on this plant so no Marshfield fair for me. It hasn't rotted out yet but looks kinda weird.

The 1426.5 Lariviere is still growing all though slowly. I expect this because of the anthesis. Need to make it past 35 days for proof it is growing. Not taking any measurements right now. But it's around 220 ott

1327.5 Rea is growing but is also small. Another anthesis treated pumpkin so we will see. It looks big here but is narrow and tall.

Back up on the Rea plant is near the fence but has room to grow. This was an open pollination That I let go. Its about 10 feet out on a secondary and probably 20 feet total from the main pumpkin.

Backups on the 1426.5 Lariviere. I call them the twins one was an open pollination and one was a 1998.5 Jutras cross. I have it written down as to which is which. Pollinated days apart but the same size and shape.

First year trying to grow giant tomatos. This is my first pick off a 3.23 Marley. unofficial weight. Got some bigger ones that will be weight at a local deli. Might have one pushing 3 pounds.

Does anybody grow Pineapple tomatoes for size? I've got a 2.02 one that I grew. I think it's the biggest one I've ever grown. Usually grow just to eat.

Well the year wasn't a total bust for me. My 1426.5 Lariviere made it to the scale. It is now the 561.5 Fleming. It went heavy so I'm happy about that. Even placed and got a little payout. One more small one just to get an official weight for the genetics at Frerich's next weekend.

Short story. Car in front of my jacked on the brakes. We were only going about 10 to 15 miles an hour in traffic. Lower strap let go and pumpkin called shot gun.

Great day at Frereich's yesterday. The 1327.5 Rea is now 307 Fleming. Saw the North American record broken and several personal best for growers. Already thinking of next year.
