Some advertising:
Coco-WetŪ
Unique and Neutral Wetting Agent. Garden sprays work best with a wetting agent to reduce runoff and allow plants to absorb more nutrients. Coco-Wet, an organic wetting agent with no ionic charge, which allows Micronutrients and Fertilizer to work at peak efficiency.
I tried this product for the first time last year and could see it beneficially working ;) I ordered a gallon today.

Here are some cactus I have been growing for over four years. The middle in the bird is a cattail cacti (pun intended) sent to me from my sister Therese in Texas. The other three I started from seed. They doubled in size this last summer due to some "pumpkin" fertilizers.

I may have told this story before. My Thanksgiving Cactus is about 28 years old and did not bloom for many years as it was placed on a table with no sunlight. After a move to a south east window, it now blooms several times a year. I rarely fertilize it, just water once a week. So the moral of the story is with the right light, it shines :)

New Richmond, Wisconsin has been my home twice in my life. For several years during the late 70's/early 80's. And then I moved back 20 years ago. I call New Richmond my home. We are well into March, the snow mostly melted and the growing season upon us; I am reminded of the song Edelweiss that I have sang my whole life (when no one is listening). You might catch me singing this song on the farm. :)

I have learned that it is best to replace the poly on the hoop houses every year as it gets brittle and may not withstand heavy winds. This is another cost (this role $35.00) and a little tedious work. Luckily, I have a carpenter friend who owes me a garden favor.

My six tomato seeds all came up in 4.5 days @ 80F. They were up early Saturday a.m., I was busy at our SCGA/WGPG Grower's Meeting and did not take them off the heat and put under a grow light until evening, so three of them bolted; may need to redo. Two still have their heads stuck in the ground. The 8.41 MacCoy is perfect.

The Great Outdoors! It was a little too windy today and it will be a little too stormy tomorrow but the 1916 was begging to get out. Two side vines in a row on the same side, if you look close you can see the one wants to grow straight up in the air. I will unbury some of the main once the sides take off, get less perky and throw down some roots. 1916 is the winner here over 4 feet long.

Took all the hoops off, cut down the backups, pruned and buried, and bug spray. Nice effort on the bike and on the plants. It IS a race.

After at least five continuous hours of this growing areas work ... committed on the 1916 first set, culled the second set, still have the third. Included vine buries, terminations, elimination of unneeded male flowers (sorry guys), tilling again as this is the new spot (I have quite the rock quarry now), rigging up the new gate and hauling the pumpkin litter to the fire pit to burn. Two of the five plants beckon me for the same treatment.

Wish I had a movie of this:
I is so windy here today!!! 20mph and gusting to 40mph. Luckily, only one of my outside vines was ripped up and tipped over about 10 leaves back, so far. I went to do some burying and it took a little work to right the vine and rebury it with the wind still blowing so strong. I was happy with my work and moved on to the next one. Looking back as another gust arrived to see it ripped up again. It made me laugh. I debated terminating the vine. I did rebury very well :)

The St Croix Growers Association is planning our summer patch tour for Saturday, August 22nd from 2:00-5:00pm. Once again, we will be touring the patches of Lorelee Zywiec, Pete Midthun, & Chris Stevens/John Hopkins. While we recognize that this is the same lineup of growers as last year, we have chosen this group due to the fact that this will be John's last year growing pumpkins. John has generously agreed to host the post-tour reception at his place and we'd like to take the opportunity to celebrate his successes in the hobby. All the growers listed above have reported incredible pumpkins on the vine as of this writing. The growth season in and around the New Richmond area has been unbelievable. Thus, barring any unexpected losses, the pumpkin lineup in these patches are certain to impress. As we've done in the past, this will be a potluck event. Please bring a dish to pass and some lawn chairs. The club will provide grilled meat and beverages. If you'd like to attend, please rsvp to stcroixgrowers@gmail.com and we will email you directions and other details. Look forward to seeing you there! -Joe Ailts, President - SCGA

My 1916 x 2323 day 50 384OTT estimated 1220# still growing 35.8#/5 day average. You can see The Sinking Ship/King two stem issues and one blossom issue. It is not rotting, yet. It has had these issues since day 40 and packed on an estimated 397#'s in those ten days. The stem holes are dried and do not go through to the cavity. The blossom hole remains relatively the same but goes through to the cavity. My hope is the growth will close the blossom hole and make it a sound pumpkin. My goal is to keep it growing at this time. :)

I just want to talk a little about my 1916. In the beginning, what a beautiful plant and was my oldest and largest pumpkin. Fate took a bad turn and a small hole near the blossom around day 60; however it continued to grow and I could not give up. Last Thursday it was finally clear it had been decaying from the inside out. Unfortunately, my waiting cost be the seed harvest on this one. Now it is rotting in the middle of my backyard. Too late to try to move ... oops ... yes ... it smells AWFUL ... omg ... funny. I have been busy the last couple days pulling the vines and clearing the patch. Some of the sidevines are bigger than my arm. The main and stem are crazy huge. I will try to get a photograph. I would grow the 1916 again without a doubt. I had pulled the 1756 backup ... hmmmmm!!! :)
