Once I have my pumpkins set and the protective baskets are no longer of use to cover them, I then clear up the stump/basel crown/planting spot of old leaves, any tertiary growth and cover with my little protective baskets with a rock on top....works for me.
I do overhead water and we get lots of rain usually, so having the stump covered keeps everything exposed dry and I don't need to go into that area of the patch anymore.
Amazing how many people will ask, "what are those little baskets for?"
