the hand warmers still held the air temp in the 5 gallon bucket up 2 degrees at 5.5 hours from midnite to 5:30. i think with a warm bottle of water and some hand warmers under a styrofome cooler would be the best solution after reading shannon's post. i would swap both out once in the middle of the night with a fresh hot bottle of water and a fresh hand warmer. i would think this would be able to hold off a good 5 or more degrees below freezing if needed. especially if also in a hoophouse too. watered in some merit cuz i have seen some betles flying around as of late. once while fishing for some crappie and once at work. what i thought was a corn beetle i identified on line as a soldier beetle. it's one of the good guys and is a insect hunter. never new there were so many types of beetles. still trying to find the shiney golden brown beetle with 2 black diamonds on its back looking vary similar to a cuke. i have a feeling that these flying beetles of similar size, athe fact that the corn around here is already in and about 4" high, and also that it has been the hottest april here on record with 6 degrees above average has everything 3 weeks ahead of schedule for the average year. maybe this cool stretch will slow them down. drenched merit yesterday to be sure and will use a very very light dose of tastar one if an early wave of cukes hit us. got a rain day today. windy cold 50 degrees and raining outside, 72 right now in the shazzydome and the smaller greenhouse at 7 am. with a little more sun that thermostat will kick off the heaters at 80 degrees. think i will go out in the shazzydome and pick which 5 tomato plants i will keep. the rest of the knuckleheads at bobby's tap are having their tomato plant draft...just like the nfl draft. rolling dice to see who goes first. gonna be a fun rain day at the tap.
