and well well well, what do we have here. my shits n giggle plants are paying me off with this cool looking thing that i guess will turn into the speckled long neck swan gourd. it was tucked away between the solarium glass and the corner of the ivey and fence. cool. i have lost many to blossom end rot and have found if i can find the females the day after pollination and remove the petals, i can get them to set for longer eventhough many die and abort in the heat. so far a free packet of seeds and a little work brought this joy and i felt like a kid on christmas wehen i discovered it tonight. i also discovered about 10 cuke beetles in 10 minutes while pulling female blossom petals off and checking them out. so i brought out the backpack pump sprayer and hit them and my tomatoes with quadris, demand cs, and 0-13-0. hopefully this will also help with setting females from the absorbed phosphorous into the leaves and the calcium that will wash off to the roots when it rains early tomorrow morning while stopping powdery mildew and bugs from transfering to the other side of the house on the wings of bugs at the same time. did not see one cuke beetle in the patch so far today, but all these open flowers attracted them to the gourds. watched them drop off the leaves one by one off the gourds while spraying. gonna post an alert to illinois growers about the recent cuke sightings.
