For those wondering how we train and pin down the vines. This is a side getting gently moved to the position we want it. This also helps keep the plant from getting rolled in a stiff wind, but wind breaks at this stage is critical. We had 54 mph winds about 10 miles north and west of us today, but given past experiences, the shade cloth we have up will work in 70 mph wind and not harm the plant. It may not be pretty, but it is effective.
