Here is a picture to try and depict how I think a side vine can be turned into a main vine by making it the longest growing vine and I think the plant doesn't really know the difference.
I am not saying this is ideal, because the part of the new main that is between the old main and the pumpkin more than likely has no side (because you trimmed the tertiaries from it) and I think those sides closest to the pumpkin are important.
But I do believe there is no reason to give up and expect you can't compete if you don't get a main vine set.
I welcome everyone's thoughts on this.
