They only come above ground once to mate and are fairly succeptible to foraging raccoons... I'd imagine because they choose to lock up on the ground. Really cool when your bugs get super sized to fit the scale of the patch. Thankfully, their appetite isn't for cucurbits. Gnarly looking caterpillars as well, hope they made it to safety!
