For years I've underestimated how much the side vines contribute to the melons. Totally dead stump yet the sides continue to set fruit and grow them. The plant set roots wherever there was sand. Some penetrated the woven fabric others seemed to stay on top in the sand wicking the nutrients from below. Harvested a 30+ pound melon from one of those sides that set after the plant died.
