I am breaking in a virgin patch this year. Patch A is my main patch where I grew my three largest Pumpkins. 1223 in 2014, 899.5 in 2015 and 885 in 2018.
Patch B is where I grew the 814.5 that won the 150 Square foot contest in 2014. That Patch has struggled with disease since which is part of the reason that I took last season off to grow Mustard.
Patch C is my new patch. Last fall I dug up the front lawn. I completely excavated the top 12" of soil and went down to 24" in a 10 x 10 area around the planting site. I then laid the soil back in alternating layers of manure, compost and native soil tilling with each layer. I then tested the soil ,added amendments and planted some winter rye. My plan is to put an 18' x 20' hoop house over pretty much the entire patch.
