You can better see the missing stump in this picture. The stump started deteriorating in late July and we tried to save it. On August 1st the rot had moved down the main 2 secondaries deep and we removed the stump and the 2 secondaries on August first. By measurement the pumpkin estimated at 564 pounds. The cut end was covered by a styrofoam roof with a fan blowing on it 24/7. Our last measurement for this pumpkin estimates it at 1483 pounds. That is an increase of 919 pounds since the stump was terminated. So if you ask yourself what to do in this situation? I would not hesitate to terminate the stump and protect the vine to still get good growth.
