The main roots were large and long. The longest one went out about seven feet from the base before I broke it. Most of them were approximately three inches deep and ran along the top of the soil. It was still pencil size at the break so it could have went on a long way. The soil where this basil crown is located is very loose, well draining soil that is at least 18 inches deep. This is the only pit I dug and filled with compost in the fall, the pit was 24" deep minimum.
