this is the time of the year when peeking under the sheets is a daily nail biting experience. today i found a stem side split on newman (1306) that will probably take the pumpking down. it is on the outside edge of a bulging rib section that will in my mind grow deeper quickly. fan is running on it and addressed with captan. who knows, the flesh is very thick in that area and we will see what happens. i will try to nurse it along as best as possible. i might try some surgery on it and cut the split out if it gets worse. never tried it before, but might try it on this one. i heard of it being done and will make that decision in the next week. and i got the fan running on cosmo (1446) stem side again. this is one of those stem splits where the stem meets the pumpkin and you can see into the stem. not a cavity breacher and i have seen these in the past. no harm no foul if you keep the rot out. blew some captan into the opening and fan 24-7 from here on out. this will require a shade tent now which goes up tonight to keep the stem completely dry and fan protected. took my first ott measurement on day 40 on cosmo and has him sitting at 641 pounds on day 40. 140-85-87. a steady 2 circ per day the past 5. it still has not showing signs of fast maturing which is a good thing for now. laney is growing good and georgie shows no signs of trouble at this point. georgie is a low wide mama that is starting to get a shoulder hump across the mid section a little more towards the stem side. stem stress and stumps inspected and no trouble sings except the rotted 997 stump. now that the old leaves have been remove around all stumps, i am going to place white laundry baskets elevated on styrofome blocks over the stumps to keep the dry but having wind access.
