Give your patch two doses, of Black Strap Molasses, about two weeks apart early this Spring. The first two applications may be four ounces, in a gallon, of water. Heating the water helps, to mix the molasses and spray it easier. This will serve you well, to fire up the biological life and get your compost pile cooking early.

After the first two drenches drop back, to Two ounces per gallon per week. Work up to two gallons, on a 1000 sq. ft. patch as the plant develops. These applications should be foliar with modest run off.

The use of fish oil, liquid kelp and molasses is a great foliar combination. The use of each, in rotation, causes the other two, to be even better than if used alone.

Black Strap Molasses is found where cattle feed is made for the farm market. The cost is not much per gallon. I pay eight dollars, for five gallons. Single gallons up to $3.00.

You will need about three gallons to service a 1000 sq. ft. patch with a bit left over for your compost pile.

THanks Doc, great info, I have been curious about the application method for a long time, but just have never asked. You're saying to mix the fish/kelp/molasses all together and spray it as one application, or apply them all seperately on a rotating schedule throughout the season?? THanks again. Mike

I am a firm believer in small amounts of anything applplied more often. Therefore three items alternating could be every other day deliver a snack by foliar feeding. The other days could be for other sprays you determine may be needed.

Cool Doc, I would like to give that a try this season. I just got back from a really good auction and got some really good supplies for growing. It was an old greenhouse/nursery business and the owners were retiring and moving to florida...got some really good deals on some sprinklers/fittings/pvc pipe/lots of seed trays, and LOTS of misc. I even managed to get my dad'a old 2wd ford stuck out in the middle of the cornfield...lol...what a hoot!!

Following Doc's advice I went on a search over the internet. Hard to find locally or just pure lazyness. 1 gallon came out to be $17.69 shipped. Not bad considering it will last a long time.

My local feed store sells bulk molasses for 2 bucks/gal. It's cane molasses and I don't know if it's considered black strap which I know comes from the final stage in extracting sugar crystals from the cane. He gets it in a 55 gal drum from Malaysia. It doesn't list the composition of the contents. Does anyone think this would be comparable to blackstrap molasses? The healthfood stores also sell it but charge a lot more.

Go Jim go..........you are into the good stuff at the right price. If you look around enough you can actually pay $40.00 a gallon for Black Strap Molasses, plus shipping. Mercy! It does pay to shop a bit!!!
