i remember seeing a picture in htgwcgp vol 1 where there were about 3 or 4 big pumpkins growing on a big manure pile.. my question is when i go to dump a bunch on my secret patch should i till it in or just let it stay on top? thanks keith

Hey Keith I would be willing to bet that big pile of manure you saw was well "aged". I would recommend tilling under the manure you apply.......Paul

it is my understanding that if you let the manure set on top of the soil, rain, and snow will leach out all the nutrients faster then if you till it into the soil. it could be totally wrong, but that's what i've been told.

I let my 5 = 4'x4'x4' "Mountians" of manure, compost, and leaves. Sit all winter in the elements uncovered, and stir them byweekly. when its time to plow I spread it out and turn it under. last year I didn't have as much but my OM level was around 10% this year I am hopeing for an OM of 20%. I really believe pumpkins dig decomposing organic matterial. The Compost Heap Has Spoken!!!
