can someone please shed some light on the liquid fertilizer compounds ( ex. 10-30-10) they use throughout the season. ive heard many people avoid too much nitrogen and use more p & k at fruit set, & apply high nitro. at young stages of plant growth. ive been using a 10-30-10 at fruit set. is this too much nitro?

Go Organic...Fish, Kelp, and Molasses along with manure applications in the fall. Your pumpkin and earthworms will thank you.

we do not use any commercial water soluable or granular for the period of last week in june thru the second week in july
fertalizing during pollination can cause abortion and fruit set problems
most of our program is organic now where as several years back we were heavier on the commercial additives
we do feel you need both at different times during the season but, of the utmost importance is that your growing area is well balance with organic matter in a sufficient quantity ( 10 to 15 percent is a good goal )
* your soil test will tell you where you are presently at

early on say the first month we water with small quantities of peters 10-50-10 along with either kelp or fish depending on our soil test ( develope a good root system )

the second month we switch to a balanced water soluable 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 in small amounts along with kelp or fish
nothing is added as mentioned abouve during the pollination period ( plant and root growth )

for the first three to four weeks after polination we basicly use mostly different combinations of golden harvest, vigo-cal,kelp,neptunes harvest,soil soup, in small doses in with our watering program ( we never let the soil dry out either, always keep the patch evenly watered but not drenched)

from the second week in august out to say mid september we add at different times 0-0-60 and/ or 12-0-44 or 5-10-40 along with the kelp applications ( for fruit growth )
everything is added in moderation

for example if you were to use 0-0-60 granular you only need to apply two lb to the plant area once in mid august and once in early sept
if you are using a water soluable mix of say 5-10-40- or 12-0-44 you need to mix 5 lbs in a four gallon solution of water and two cups kelp meal
then reduce again by running this mix thru a injector or hose end feeder that automaticly mixes the solution

* all this and we didnt even talk about insect and disease control l o l

There are lots of ways to fertilize that work. Maintaining high organic matter really helps. I use manure, compost and 10-10-10 in the fall. After planting I use 15-30-15 (Miracle Gro generics), switch to bloom booster with higher P around blooming time, then after fruit set I switch to Schultz water soluble tomato food, which is higher K. Seems to work for me.
