Garden State Pumpkins

Wife thinks I'm crazy.but just read the Dave Stelts transcript. He does mention Calcium Nitrate as one of his secrets..with all the questions being thrown out at him I'm Not sure that the subject was fully covered but he seemed adament about it....Is there a trade name for it or what.. want to get all the things in the garden now ...or is it a add on during the season..Thanks Chuck

I think Dave sprays Calcium Nitrate directly on the fruit specifically, and on the plant also.

Hey Chuck, the calcium nitrate I've used in the past had no trade name, I just bought it at a co-op. I'm not using it this year. This year I'm strictly appling ammonium sulfate as a granular fertilizer & for the calcium I'm using chelated calcium as a spray on the fruit as well as the plants.

Guys,

The calcium Dave sprays on his plants, and covers his pumpkins with towels soaked in, is Foli-cal(water soluble). Calcium nitrate which is usually sold as such, is in granular form. Calcium nitrate works it's best in cooler weather and helps build up wall thickness. A lot of growers, like myself, will broadcast calcium nitrate before planting, and then may add a little more towards the end of the season. Foli-cal can be sprayed on the leaves and fruit itself.

Alright Guys thanks fo rthe help. So I would broadcast the granular early to package directions. Then after fruit set will get a water soluable form to soak towels in to promote thick fruit walls then at the end of the season as it gets cooler another granular feed, I got to thanks everyone so much to learn thanks again Chuck

I ordered mine from Northwest Seed and Pet. Try another co-op anyone in the business should be able to get Calcium Nitrate! You did'nt ask the janitor for help did you???
I was however only able to get it in a fifty pound bag for about $20. Never heard of Calcium Nitrate, they probably never heard of Nitrogen! Sorry I get a little miffed at sales people that say "I never heard of that" just to get rid of you.

The problem you are encountering is "poorly trained "airhead" staff". We have a "huge" greenhouse, lawn and garden business in our area, and when I go to get something for big pumpkins they stare at me with blank minds and faces! When I asked a young gal for "spreader/sticker" she looked daggers at me as if I was propositioning her! And try to explain that you need a mildewcide because your plant has built up a resistance to fungicide and they look at you like, "Why did I come to work today?" Profit comes first, and if they sell you something that doesn't work, they've still "made" a sale! Find someone else in your area that grows AGs, and they'll steer you in the right direction!

thought about what you said, and it was just before Easter so maybe they were to busy for a special request. Decided to go to this big greenhouse in the Jersey Swamp....and guess what...aisles of specialty bags... went and asked for calcium nitrate ....hmmmm sounds like you need bone meal was the response....going to the internet guess we only know tomato plants in the "GARDEN STATE".

I bough a couple of 50 lb bags from Agway around $14.00 each, they had to order it but they had it the next day, so no doubt it was from a local supplier.

UAP/United Horticultural carries it, most feed stores can order it if not in stock. Paid less than $10 for 50 lbs. last week. Find the dealers in your area for ag products, they are your best bet. It comes in granular and water soluble forms. Many growers like to use a chelated calcium as well, calcium metalosate is one I know of, probably the most expensive one too. Calcium is essential in building strong cell walls in the plants and isn't especially mobile in plant tissues, which is why direct applications to the plant and fruit can help. Watch your nutrient levels, too much K can block the uptake of calcium by the plant. We all like to supply nutrients in abundance to our AG's, but we shouldn't forget balance as well.

I went to the Agway Fertilizer plant today in Sangerfield and asked about buying some Calcium Nitrate. The guy said what the heck is that? Then he said what do you use it for? We Never heard of it. So i would love to know where i can buy some here in New York
