Peatmoss is awsome, In many ways, it helps loosen up the soil and at the same time adds Organic matter and lowers your PH ( if thats your need ) some Peatmosses will actually raise your PH, I use Spaghnum Peatmoss and its worked wonders do a search on peatmoss and you will find allot of good information

I have used peat both Canadian and local, for fifty some years, of gardening. I always use it when making a new bed and till it right, in with the grass and weeds....whatever.
It blends well with any other additives you may be placing.
If mother does not water it until it is completely moistened and crumbly within the mix I add the water and more tilling to get it into the total and working.

I would rather use all manures and or composts, to do this, but time is not always, on my side. Neither are available manures or composts. I go ahead and build the bed and introduce the manures and composts when I have them or can handle them.
