The ditch around my patch was mucked out today by the township. The muck is black and stinks. Would it be any good to my patch or not?

You could take a handful, dry it out and give it a soil test.

Wet soil like that in our area tends to be a little acid. I don't know what it is like in your part of the world, but I would sure test the PH. Usually the black stinky muck here is high in organic matter.

Thanks. I'll do a PH test first. My patch soil is 6.9.

The muck gets taken out every year to keep the ditch at a certain depth and to prevent it growing full of rushes and water lilies. I've got tons of the stuff at my disposal so it would be nice if it was useful.
