Are granulars and drenches used at the same time or is one used in place of the other?

It depends on the intended nutrient goal. Which nutrients are we talking about?

I was reading in Don Langevins book about a fertilizing schedule and it shows where, say in week 5 for example, you're applying mostly nitrogen. The application is a 'drench-broadcast'/foliar spray(seaweed). I use fish emulsion for a drench but he recommends granular for a broadcast. I know that granular is slow release and drenches leach out, but what I don't want to do is overfeed and damage the health of the plant(i.e. leaf burn; bloating). That's why I am wondering if they are applied together. Thanks for your help.

Ok

Soluble Nitrogen commercial fertilizers (urea or nitrate based) are all prone to volatilization & leaching regardless granular or sprayable.

Fish emusions are much less prone to these losses so if that is your primary source of Nitrogen I wouldn't worry about the source. Meals that are soil applied might take a little longer to become available but liquid fish emulsions are not prone to leaching.

If you're soil applying fish meal (8-12-0) before planting don't use more than 6-7 lbs per 100 square feet. This will provide about half the plants seasonal need of Nitrogen. This way you will still be able to make foliar treatments of emulsions of fish or seaweed throughout the season without the concern of bloating. Just remember to watch the Nitrogen of all the other things you might be applying as a foliar spray.
