I found a couple bottles of buck stop log licker syrup that was on clearance at Meijer. It is a syrup meant to be poured over a log for deer. If you look at the ingredients though it is cane molasses and "fat products." My question is could I use this as molasses for my patch or will the fat cause other problems? I figured I would pick one up and ask if I should use it or not. I I don't use it for the patch I will use it for the deer.

I don't know about the fat. My inclination would be not to use it in the patch. I use black strap molasses. When the snow cover melts this week I will be spraying some molasses & seaweed to get the ol' microbes fired up for spring.

I suggest you dont use it extra --the fat nope go to a mill or feed supply molasses --use it on the ground -2--3 time s with activtior to get MAX bio groth---

I agree with the above judgement. Use it for the deer. The brand I looked at did not have the additives.

I get my black strap molasses from the grocery store. (Family Fare) Another good grocery item for use in the patch is corn meal. For the worms...

I wasn't trying to derail the thread. Juist trying to share a silly email I got today.

I would also keep to the simple plain old fashioned black strap molasses. Other fortified versions may contain unwanted preservatives.

Thanks for the responses. I already have some cornmeal I planned on putting in the patch as well. I think there will be plenty of mole-asses in the patch too, at least until they crawl through one of my traps. But I will stick to the black strap and save the protein for the deer.

I purchased molasses from a feed mill recently ($7/5 gals) and asked about the "additives". The only thing this supplier adds is a very low percentage of animal fat in order that the product flows for them in the cold weather.

8,000 gallons of molasses in the winter here would be pretty tough to pump ;-)
