I am trying to grow the biggest pumpkin possible in my county area. I am using atlantic giant pumpkin seeds I got from P&P Seed Co. I just dug a hole about 4' across and 4' deep and plan to grow just one vine in it. What is the best soil I can put in the hole? I have lots of sand straight to china so I'm not worried about drainage. I have some composted manure, topsoil, and a bunch of decayed leaves. I was thinking of adding a little 12-12-12 fertilizer in and mixing all the leaves, manure, topsoil and maybe some peat moss together in the hole. Would this work ok? What kind of PH do pumpkins like. Will the hole be big enough?

The soil sounds like it will work well for your pumpkins. 4 feet deep will work but your plants will need a lot of room to grow. I have a 10 x 20' patch that I dug about 3 feet down and even that will probably not be big enough; but as long as I prune heavily and let the plants run onto the lawn, it should be okay. The PH for your pumpkins should be about 7. You can pick up a PH soil tester at a garden store for a couple bucks and test it yourself. Good luck
