ok you dig your hole put in your favorite compost and ammendments. grow your pumpkin. next year do you pull out the old compost or leave it?

A Pumpkin requires a patch not a hole...Ammend the entire patch..The old compost becomes dirt..Just add more.

Agreed with Shannon...treat the entire patch like your planting hole and you will be happy with the results.
