I have access to a pile of composted horse manure, it's about a year old. Would this be ok to till into the pumpkin patch?

Horse manure is great. if your putting it down in the spring make sure it's composted well.

Horse is our preference if it's composted. It has more potassium than cow. However cows have multiple stomachs (chew cud) so there are fewer weeds. If it is composted there is none better.

The stuff I have been getting is mixed with wood shavings { bedding material } and straw, most of it is broken down pretty well. I spread about an inch of it on top so it should be nice and dry by the time I till it all in late april

Peace Wayne, well composted horse manure should be very dark in color almost black, smell like potting soil, and it should be rather loose like potting soil. When it is fresh,"hot" it is more of a yellow color. You do not want to spread fresh horse manure in the spring. Although it is fine to put it on and till in the fall.

If it has an abundance of worms living in it, then it's compost.

ZAPPA provided a fine description of well composted manure.
