Any ideas on how to prevent my 55-gallon drums of warming water from becoming mosquito breeding grounds?

Andy, you'll be rotating the warmed water every day or so, so it won't be any problem with the bugs. If still concerned, put a lid on it. Gotta love those MN mosquitos. Steve

Andyman...dont cut the tops off the drums...just leave the screw cap open...its only like 3 inches across....WAY TOO SMALL AN OPENING for a Minnesota mosquito !.....lol....G

If you must use open tanks, & they remain filled for more than 10 days, just throw a Summit Mosquito dunk in there once in a while. The dunks are shaped like donuts & contain BT. A harmless organism that will not damage the pumpkins.

I collect rain water for my plants. To keep the mosquitos out of it, I put a tablespoon of vetable oil in it. The oil skims the top and the bugs can't get to the water. It's not a profound system but it works for me.

I know of one heavy hitter who uses old swimming pools for reservoirs, cover them, and you'll have no skeetos! Veg. oil works well too, but must be re-applied after rain. Another cure: throw some bluegills or sunfish in there! If you have fish you won't have mosquitos!
