What effect would the use of fireplace ashes have on the soil?

Wood ashes are an excellent source of free potash- 5-10% and also useful liming material. You may want to get a soil test before you go adding something that you may not need.

It will also drive the pH SO use caution.

Will drive it up so you may have to add something with lower ph to balance it out.
