id try and keep water out of the split because excess water inside the split (especially once the split starts to heal over on the botton)a sprinkling of sulfer over the split will helo healing as well.
id cover the split with something so the water does not collect inside the split.
once it heals over and closes you should be ok.
if you have squash vine borers in your area wrap a thin layer of gauze around the split until the possibility of borers has passed by.
splits do occur quite frequently but are not the end of your plants season.

This is the sulpher I used.

I also used Captan.

a fan blowing on it will help speed up the drying process too.

i had a split like that all season about 18" from my stump at a secondary junction on the main. the split widened all season. water got in the split early on so i put a small drain hole in the main on the opposite side. i had to clean it and re-clean it regularly and apply captan and left a fan on it all season. by cleaning, i mean remove any browning to firm flesh and use a 10% bleach solution on cleaned areas. i also covered it with a 2 small patio table and a tarp draped over on all sides to prevent sidways rain from hitting. the fan sits under one patio table and the other is directly above the fissure with the tarp over both. it worked and i eventually i ended up with the 1493. now worries mate if kept dry and clean.
