I have 2 big dogs and a nice new compost bin that wants to be broken in.... at least more than my shoes. I don't recall anyone ever utilizing dog poop as compost? Is there something in dog food that negatively effects the final "product"? I am laughing while writing this post but am serious... should I use it?

The borer is correct - the following is from gardensalive.com

If the animal is a meat eater, like a dog, cat, lion or tiger, do not use the material in any form; even meat-eaters that are kept indoors can harbor dangerous parasites that are completely absent in ‘veggie manures’. That’s right—no dog or cat pet poop should EVER go in the compost! If you already made that mistake, don’t use the compost; and wear gloves when you toss it into the woods or otherwise dispose of it.

You know a great deal about this kind of stuff, espically for your job title being so high up in the Health Department,
So what do you know your not saying ha!,, how might it be possible?,,lol Reason why I ask is because we humans are meet eaters, so do we digest meat differently then animals do?

I know they use human waste in China or Japan(I think its China?) by literally spreading straight human waste on the fields for their crops they eat.
Does the US buy these crops from them to sell here in the states by chance?,, please tell me they dont Andy, you wouldn't allow that food through would you??!!? ha!!

I'm just at the local level, meaning I do the restaurant inspections (among other things), so I don't get to see much of the "big picture" of food movement. That's USDA jurisdiction.

But yes, we do import fruit & vegetables from China right along with everything else.

OK - so what do we know about rhino and elephant poo??

Most large cities have a zoo where this may be available before or after it is turned to compost.

I read that it is suppose to have twice the nitrogen of cow manure but wonder about parasites and diseases. Any thoughts.

Swaintech, rhinos and elephants are herbivores,(they only eat grasses and such).I am sure that if it is well composted, it would be fine.

I tried to get elephant manure from the Buffalo zoo (thinking big poo, big pumpkin) and they wouldn't give me any.They said there were insurance issues.

My Asian compadra at work says they call the human fertilizer "Night soil" and they usually deposit it "directly" in the field.... Many municipalities mix sewage sludge from treatment plants with compost and sell it as a soil amendment/fertilizer in Seattle area they call it K-Grow.

I for one am with the Borer, dont get any on ya...

I read about elephant poop 20 years ago.We have the circus come to our town every year, so back then, I took a box of plastic bags and gathered it up.About a small truck load of big dry patties, kinda like cow poop patties but bigger.I have to honestly say, it's the best manure by far I ever used.Composts up to a more fluffy texture and I remember everthing really was healthy that I grew that year...lol...thanks for the memories...that was a long time ago.

Treated sewage has been used in soils for many years over here, the "treatment" was supposed to include high temperatures to kill harmful organisms and the stuff was blended with garden soils, potting media etc. The temps could not have been that high due to the great crops of tomatoes we used to get in some of our gardens we did, and there was only one place that seed could have come from! Use in your flowerbeds not the patch.

I used to get compost from County Landfill,here in Owensboro,finally figured out that they used city sludge to make it cook!! Ended up w/ way heavy, heavy metal counts in my patch, Boron, Iron etc!!! Hopefully, in 5 years or so, I might be able to grow a pkn!!!! LOL Peace, Wayne

Hey Wayne, My Boron was 5 ppm and the Iron was only 3 ppm. The extractable Al was 1 ppm and the lead level was low so I guess I'm OK with that.

Has anyone ever seen a post of the optimum numbers of a soil test for growing "the big one"? It would great to study the numbers of the top 10 in the world. Obviously genetics would have an effect but I would still like to see the similarities in the soil numbers of the top growers.

I'm thinking here that whiskybravo is unaware of the hellhole we here in the states know as Love Canal, New York. Back in the seventies, Love Canal became known as the hellhole of earth due to the many occurrences of cancer and birth defects because a whole community was built on top of a landfill containing many dangerous chemicals which subsequently entered the ecosystem, water aquifer, and food chain. The companies and developers who were responsible sloughed off the claims of community residents as long as they could, but were ultimately held responsible for their dubious and indiscriminate carelessness and disregard for human life and safety in the name of the almighty dollar. As I recall, the Environmental Protection Agency was born as a result.

I remember those days well, as it was a long-time news item here in the states.

I curse every day the environmental constraints and costs we all have to deal with on a daily basis, but without them we would all still be living the hell that was Love Canal.
