Ok, last year i watered my sguash from my well. i found out that my water has a high amount of rust or iron, which ever it is. does anyone have any suggestions on what to do.
i know when i waterd the plants, it did turn the veins rust colored. i will be sending a water sample in to see what they say to do.
Thought i would see if anyone else has the same problem.

Thanks Danny

Danny, call around and find the best well man in your area. Chances are it's a bacteria that causes the "iron" condition, I have it here. Every 3 years we treat the well with mild bleach and water treatment to clear it. If this is a problem in your area that well man will know the best procedure. I too have had the rusty leaves it didn't affect growth for me.

ZAPPA

Western PA

I live in western PA, close to Sharon PA. This area has a lot of iron in the water table.A water softener with a filter for iron would help. I have no idea on the cost for a system.

I used my well water that I know has a lot of iron in it last season,(we don't even drink it) and my plants did great.I did not notice my roots turning orange. The water that comes out of my faucets only has a slight orange tint to it, so maybe yours is worse than my scenerio.

Have been trying to re-establish (make work again) an old well that my grandparents used for their house, years ago...and I say...good luck finding that "best well man in your area" I can't find anyone who will even come out and look?? Any ideas on how to find a well man are welcomed!!! Peace, Wayne

What's your ground water level, Wayne? If it is low maybe it could be a DIY repair or handyman special. If you need a referral to a well man, perhaps the health department has one. I say this because we pull our permits through the health department.

Thanks Unkadan and Zappa. i know im going to get a water test done. the softner i can do, but im afraid of the salts in the water then. I think there is a dug well not to far from the house. going to try to run a pump from this. i used a dug well at my other house, was much better water than my well from the house. thanks for all the advice.

I would also suggest you have it tested for irrigation suitablility. A & L does this test.

Finding out the pH and components of Bicarbonate levels may suggest you might also have to pretreat your water with acids.
