I read in Pumpkin Nook News that many of the heavy hitters are using liquid calcium. Where do you get it, what brand names, how often do you apply and at what strength? Thanks Tom

I use Nutri-Cal, 6-0-0, 10% calcium. *Tremor*, aka Steve Jepsen, can help you locate it. I use it as a foliar once a week at this point, much more when fruits are set.

Also here's a link to a site that sells 12% calcium. Just type in "calcium" in the site search box.....http://www.groworganic.com/

Tom,

I sell Liquid Chelated Calcium. Just sent you an email of the spec sheet. Copied my office so I remember to send you prices in the AM.

There's a store locator on the website I sent you. We might have a store near you. There's about 240 all together so maybe.

Steve

Thanks for the info guys. Steve there is a store (#444) only a few miles away in Rochester NY. Southern-do you mix 6 quarts to 100 gals. of water as they recommend? How much more often do you foliar feed after the fruit sets? Do you continue neptune harvest, miracle grow, etc with the calcium? Obviously I am worried about over fertilizing. Thanks again-Tom

Swain,
I've been using 1 oz per gallon of water for foliar but that will increase to 3-4 when fruit sets. How that equates to quarts per 100 gallons i don't know...haven't added it to my drip system yet as we keep getting so much rain I haven't had to use it yet. You can also use it as a drench.

I have also heard of growers using straight Nutri-Cal and wetting towels with it which then are wrapped around the fruit itself. The Nutri-Cal is pectin based which means it theoretically will soak in/thru the pumpkin skin to keep it more pliable for expanded growth, ie: helps prevent holes or splits with quick spurts of fruit growth.

I don't use much fertilizer, a little 5-20-10 water soluble initially and some blood meal at this stage...other than that I'm all manure based. But the fact I use a calcium fert doesn't change my regime. I continue to use fish emulsion and Bolster (seaweed+humic acids+iron+sulphur) at the same time as well.
