I'm new and I used some spectracide, but mostly just pyrethrum. I have a berry farm and my neighbor has an orchard so I don't use anything hazardous to bees. Honey bees and native bees are declining nationwide and we should all do our part to protect them. it is estimated that 1/3 of all food consumed in the US requires bees for polination.
I also use some milk solution, alternated with baking soda for PM control. Rotenone/ pyrethrum spray had better knockdown and kill of insect pests, but they don't make it anymore. We don't have alot of insect pressure and I use floating row cover until fruit set.

Hey guys, I think that you are not getting the spoon-fed answers you want because it has all been asked before and is there for the taking by just using the search function box in the upper right corner of your screen.

Not only that, but there is some awesome information and data that pap has posted in the new growers section, that specifically addresses the questions you have asked.

Use single keyword searches in the upper search box using works like, fungicide, pesticide, foliar, and you will be amazed by the number of links and data that are immediately provided.

Its not very hard and it is all there for the taking.

This post was asking of more of a personal experience. Pap is great, but I would of liked some ideas to save some money. pap"s chemical plans costs hundreds of dollars and some too hard to get. I see that your ready to jump down the throats of the new guy. While each of the new guys that I have talked to feel that is hard to get straight answers.(no offense to the old timers)to bad that in every group there a bottom feeder like north. Who is ready to jump to belittling the new and defenseless. If you ever worked with new people you would find that most of your time is answering the same questions over and over. Maybe if your not equipped to help, maybe you should refrain from spreading your bad attitude (again)

No need for anyone to take or give offense guys. I am sure veteran growers get tired of answering the same questions over and over again, just as new growers don't want to sift through tons of irrelevant posts to find the one nugget they are looking for. The search function works only as well as the knowledge of the person using it. If you can't spell mycorrhizal it is hard to search for it. Pap has posted some great stuff, but in my position, I can't use all that harsh systemic stuff that eradicate bees as well as the targeted pests.

Veteran grower, please continue to humor new grower by answering our silly questions. New growers, please understand that veteran growers may have answered the same questions a hundred times already and at least attempt to search for the answer before asking. And lets just all get along?

Darren,Your post is the exact reason many experienced growers do not post.FYI north is not a bottom feeder and has helped more people on this site than you've read posts. If you see a product someone has recommended you like but can't afford the initial expense do a search for the active ingredient. Many times it can be found in a watered down form at home depot and lowes for cheap money but will cost you more in the long run. P.S. Chill pills are available at your local drug store.

was only using the name bottom feeder. Because that was the name he used to call another grower a few posts back. If he is allowed to get his frustration out on the newbies then I wont hesitate to dish it back. He's just a bully.
But to you or any other grower that I offended I apologize.

Wow Darren. I guess my using of the term spoon-fed has offended you somehow..but clearly that was not my intent.

More often than not, I use this forum to post links to previously asked questions that have been answered and to provide path-finding for new and old growers alike.

If your curious why more heavy hitters don't use this forum and dont offer advice...I think your reply here should explain it to others.

Someone blow in Darren's ear and tell him "refill".

Garry, this will only be my 3rd year, but I used the following for fungicides and I avoided PM issues completely last year. As for pesticides, I am still trying to find something to control the borers, but also like Ben without killing all the bees. Might be hard to do.

Daconil as a spot spray once a week
Mancozeb as a spot spray once a week
Bonide Infuse as my systemic which is a cheaper version of Banner Maxx, and was highly recommended. Hope that helps

Like Linus said, every growing condition or zone is differant...we dont have vine-borers or squash bugs here in my part of the world and only battle aphids and other minor pests. Two products I mentioned..work for me.

Anyways, keyword searching here is the way to go when looking for something...hope that helps.

Sad. what I here you saying is the newbies should find there own information. Don't you think we are already using every resource avalable. Funny that when you ruffle some feathers you start getting some information. Now thank you for your useful responces. All we are trying to do is learn off your hard earned leg work.

BCG, Ortho with Bifenthrin was another I changed over to from Sevin as my spot insecticide. Sevin burns leaves when too hot. I learned from experience.

Darren, lets fish sometime. I'll bait it for you, take the fish off for you, and agree when you say Bill Dance's advice isn't what you needed but want more.

Are you saying you use all those during one season? If so it is over kill. Imadiclopriid at planting, followed up with another drench around the fourth of july. A contact insecticide to control the cukes. Rotating a fungicide with a systemic and contact after a pumpkin is set. Asking growers what to list what they use..will give you about the same response as asking what beer they drink and why. Leinenkugel's Honeyweiss

anytown U.S,A,

I see the redirection of the post really helped Garry. lol
I believe the intention of this post was to help growers find products. John Deere Landscapes wants to see if they can help by cross referencing these products active ingrediants. New products are available all the time and people use new products. it might be nice to know what people are using and if they work or not. Just my opinion

Well said Linus. There are so many different products and some aren't available to everyone. It's best to have a couple insecticides and a couple fungincides both systemic and contact and follow label directions. Use whats available in your area. You could have a hundred growers give you their exact spray program and they will all be different. BTW I drink Moosehead Cracked Canoe Lager.

This is typical of all the BP posts the last few years and its sad. I read these "answers" and I go away with only half the story....and from the experienced growers.... "Asking growers what to list what they use..will give you about the same response as asking what beer they drink and why." Shannon...WHY do you drink Honeyweiss.....Pumpkin Shepherd- WHY MCCL ?

BCG When you say biologicals are you refering to insecticides and fungicides which are easy on the water table etc.? My concern is that my well is in my yard and I would not like to use harsh stuff which will end up there. Hope this question hasnt been asked too many times before. An on going forum is, in my opinion, a good thing. Carling Lager, saving my bucks for the patch ;)

Ben what Pyrethrum product do you use?

1/16/2012 10:54:13 AM

Barbeetoo

These are the chemicals I use for pumpkins. I like to rotate things throughout the season.

Insecticides--
Talstar--active ingredient bifenthrin
Malice 75wp--active ingredient imidacloprid
Warrior Z--active ingredient lambda cyhalothrin

Fungicides--
Daconil--active ingredient chlorothanil
Headline--active ingredients pyraclostrobin, metconazole
Clearys 3336wp--active ingredient t-methyl

Bry, I started with Bonide rotenone/pyrethrum spray then switched to Bonide pyrethrum spray because they stopped making the rotenone version. In the future I will use Pyganic, because it is OMRI listed what I use for my berry farm. I use a hose end sprayer at maximum listed rate for the insect I am targeting. Pyrethrum is also a repellant, so it causes the bugs to move away as well as a contact insecticide. I spray in the evenings from 1/2 hour before sunset to dark.

Orangeneck (Team HAMMER)

Eastern Pennsylvania

Insecticides:

generic Bifenthrin IT (Talstar)
name brand Merit 75WP (active ingredient Imadacloprid
That is all that is needed for bugs.

Fungicides:

Daconil- despite having been around a while it remains the backbone of any fungicide program
Eagle 20EW- simply cannot beat it for stopping powdery mildew
Alliette- somewhat pricey but works well in my patch in limited intervals to control soil bourne diseases like pythium and fusarium.

I have nothing to add to the "other" discussion except that Glenn (Northshore) does not deserve the poor treatment I am seeing.

BCG I've used many of the chemicals listed over the years as well as generics. Here is a web site http://www.cdms.net/LabelsMsds/LMDefault.aspx

In the "Brand Name" search box you can put the active ingredient and it will pull up a list with many generics. Or you can search by manufacturer. Under "Other Search Options" you can list the "crop" and "pest" and get a list. It works for weeds too. Good luck.
