I used the Bayer T&S with 1.47% Imidacloprid (Merit) and borers still got into my plants by late season. I was treating every 3 weeks along the main vine and most of the 2ndaries. I used 5 ounces to the gallon, and they went right through it. I want to get a stronger form of Merit this time around.

Ahhh its a systemic they have to eat it to die...you should also be spraying a contact insecticide..

Linus Van Pelt, thanks for the heads up! i do spray with liquid sevin, i had great luck with it last year, but 3 borers got in, one got into the pumpkin also , but caught the little bagger before it ate to much! anything out there that will not get washed off so quickly, or could i use a binder? thanks so much, scott......

Linus, I do, I use Ortho w\ Bifenthrin. Problem is, if i don't cover every square inch of the plant, the spot spray can miss some, and the borers can get in. They chew in on the stalks and move their way down to the vine. The solution of Bayer w\ Imad wasn't strong as my systemic.

Thanks for the link, Marley.

Mert 75WP is as strong as you need. 75 percent of the totally product is the active ingredient. I use the product all the time and it's very affective.

Last year was the first year I didn't get a vine borer. Not sure why. I used Bayer t&s but only twice that year. Spectracide and sevin alternating every 5 days. I had a SVB trap It caught plenty. Never thought there was so many flying around. This year I will be changing T&S to merit. And sevin to talstar but I'm keeping the Spectracide.

Bifen IT is the same as Talstar, but much cheaper. I also get that from http://www.tampaagriculturalproducts.com.
I use an 1/8 teaspoon per gallon of merit and 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of bifen it and this seems to work really good for svb's.

I used it right off the bat. Get it into the plant to protect it early. I used granular, worked great!

I believe Merit is off patent so you can find the same ingredient under different names.
