Is it safe to use algaecide in a water tank knowing the water will be used on the pumpkin plants? The water in my tank has turned green and I am wanting to know if the water needs to be treated before using the water on the plants.

Spray paint the tank black to prevent sunlight from penetrating it. Most algaecides are copper based..Copper is not good

Linus is correct, paint the tank black or wrap it with black plastic film, make sure any white pvc pipe is painted or covered, too.

Painting the tank black works great.....I learned the hard way a few years ago when I thought it'd be cool to grow my hydroponic pumpkins in a clear container so we could see the root system grow. Duh. Sun+nutrients=Algae in no time. I used H2O2 to kill it in my system, but I only have a few gallons to treat. But, come to think of it, although I had to get rid of the algae in my system, I actually have no idea if algae is bad if it is in the water used on pumpkins. Won't the organism just die when it percolates down into the soil?

algae in the system will clog emitters, sprinklers and even valves if it is bad enough. Soon you won't be able to water evenly, if at at all.

I have white PVC pipes and while there are minimal problems during the season when used regularly they tend to grow sprinkler clogging algae when left for a while. Do yourself a favor and paint everything black. I made the mistake once of taking a shortcut and mixing fertilizer in a clear tank. I still have problems with algae now in those tanks. It grew so much in so little time that I could not believe how big a mistake I made. Buckhunter I hope you manage to kill it somehow. I used bleach with some success not sure if that was the right thing to do though.

I use a 1,500 gallon tank. I cover it with a heavy duty green tarp. Works great..

I painted my tank grey to match the house. No algae for me.

I know this post is a month old but here go's...I took my 275 gal tank out of the carrier and wrapped the tank in 6 mil black plastic......out it back in .....Done and no paint falling off.........thought I'd put it out there..P.S. Turn your tank upside down when wrapping it and leave the bottom ope. Tape the bottom edges so it's less likely to snag when going back in. The reason I did this is because when it rans the rain runs between the plastic sheeting and the tank and won't fill up and tear of your plastic..

Not sure what you are getting at with the plastic vs. painting, but mine has been out 3 years and there is no paint falling off. Just a matter of doing it right.

Gritch...My post was "NOT" directed at you or your Painted tanks Personaly..Glad it works for you. As BuckHunter was trying to figure out on his Algae problem I was just putting my two cents worth in and If I'm reading correctly you didn't attack the post by Dan The Irrigation Man as he also stated Plastic or paint but I've got big shoulders lol. I just thought (Like I previously Posted) that I would throw this Idea out there that I got at BP.com from other growers. As far as your "Not getting what I was talking about plastic versus paint"....Like my previous post clearly stated ... its simply a choice for the user to decide..wasn't trying to push the idea onto you or anyone...Good luck in growing 2012

Dan said nothing about paint falling off, and that is why I didn't "attack" his post. I didn't attack yours either, but it seems you took it that way. All I was talking about was the paint not falling off.

LOL,...I never did post a comment about Dan saying "Anything" about Paint falling off in his comment. This is silly... I'll change the wording from "Attack" lol to Directed in which I never "Directed" my first post towards you in the first place Gritch like you have now come back at me twice. I didn't realize I had to be careful on here where and what to comment on. Good Luck and Take Care...........

You didn't need to take the plastic Idea as an personal Insult..(And I got the Issues lol,lol .....Too Much...I've got Issues..LOL,LOL....Issues...LOL,LOL,LOL ..Thats Rich..lol,lol My Only "Issues" is that I can't stop Laughing about this lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol

Who said anything about "Qouting" the Bible? You need some reading comprehension. What are we in third grade with the who has the last word thing?

Just so you know I never took the plastic idea as a personal insult. You took what I wrote as an attack on you.
