when is a good time to start nitrogen.. are there any certain things to look for. we are now into our 5th week.

when your plants are small, you want a formulation that stresses phosphorus. this will encourage root growth. after you have 3 true leaves, then you can start to provide your plant with more nitrogen. this will encourage leaf and vine growth. however, you must be careful. too much nitrogen will cause the plant to just grow leaves and vines, and will abort any potential fruit. also, a good indicator would be a soil test to see how much nitrogen is present in the soil. remember, too much is no good, but its a fine line between enough, and too much. one last thing, look at your plant, what color are the leaves, yes, i know they're green! but i mean, are they dark green? light green? somewhere in the middle? a sign of too much nitrogen is very dark dark green leaves, almost blueish. what i woudl do first is take a soil test, and then go from there.

I used 15-30-15 (high phosphorous) for 4 weeks, from May 1 (week 1 outdoors) to May 30. Then I switched to 36-6-6 (High N) for the next 4 weeks. Today was my last high N fertilizing. Next up, 6 weeks of balanced fertilizer (20-20-20) through mid-August. Currently, I have vines at 13, 12, and 11 feet, and I'm starting to see the vine growth taper off some.
