Don't know til you dig. See if you can pack some dirt 1 foot down or deeper.

Really depends on your soil..I have a sandy loam on a slight downward slope of a west facing hill...I think I could water all day and never be too wet.

In contrast to Linus, I have a clay base with heavy shade the second half of the day so my area retains water pretty well. You need to figure out your area because over watering can be a vector for disease and under watering ... well.

I believe a starting point is 1 inch per WEEK, according to what I've read and heard. 80 gallons per day per plant, if I remember correctly.

I dug holes last year with a garden shovel, and if the soil was damp 10 inches down, I stopped watering.

I have a lot of clay in my soil, too.

That has been the gold standard Steve, when we have no rain, I've been going with 160 gallons per plant every second day. I'm talking full 650-850 sq ft plants.

I tend to water the plants everyday giving them an even amount daily unless it rains. My soul is clay and tends to hold water. Due to the humidity and heat we recieved ive made sure the plants are hydrated enough. Mostly its done when I feel the need. I do however add kelp and or other additives on a daly basis regardless of how the watering goes. I trye to keep the leaves alway healthy with no diease and good color.

you gotta be carefull with putting to much water down on a clay soil. they hold both nutrients and moisture a lot longer that sandy type soils that drain fast.
this is probably why you foamed out/ excess water coupled with the plant being deadheaded and the moisture uptake has no where to go. pressure builds.

There are a lot of factors involved here.wind?temps? How many hours of sun does your patch get?drainage?.I was doing 1/2inch per day in the heat 88 & higher temps. Now that winter is here in Michigan.LOL! I've toned it down to 1/4 a day.If summer returns the levels will go up as my air flow will go up.I gotta believe Pap is right. To much I think is worse then to lean.

I agree,Pap.....the plant recovered very well. I got out the razor drill and bleach as well as the captan and fan. Now its scared over and doing okay although it wont be a champion.
