I've always favored Sulfate of Potash over Muriate due to salt index issues. The soil I'll be treating has a fairly high pH already (6.8) so small amounts of Sulfur are of no concern.

K2So4 (0-0-50) Salt Index = 46
KCL (0-0-60) Salt Index = 116

I think that 1 Lb of actual K per 1000 sq. ft. should be suficient to finish.

I would appreciate the thoughts of those who have used or at least researched both materials. For reasons unknown to me, I have never seen reference to the use of SOP on this forum.

Steve, where do you find sulphate of potash? Our local garden center has nothing like that.

Our Sulfate of Potash comes from Great salt Lake Minerals. They don't sell direct.

We sell it alone &/or in blends. We have a couple west coast locations. We also purchased the former Tri-Delta Fertilizer Company in CA a few years back so we should be accessible to you somehow. Though we are a turf & ornamental supplier, SOP is SOP. The sizing isn't important for pumpkins. Though we offer it in SGN's from greens & tees on up to SGN-220. We also have a sprayable form. Try the store locator first. If they can't help let me know.

I added sulphate of potash to the soil in fall and in spring, because my soil was potassium low and that way was the best in order to keep salt level down.

Since I see no good reason to not use the SOP we applied some at my son's school today. This was a greens grade (SGN=100) 0-0-28 with 7.5% Fe, 6.5% Mn. Pretty fancy stuff for pumpkins but I had it "in the barn". Watered it in with 3-3-.3 Fish Emulsion.

I used Muriate a week ago and now a bunch of my leaves are really looking sorry. I took a sample of my problem leaves to a local garden center and the pro there told me it looked like a salt burn. After reading these posts I think that Muriate may have contributed to the problem with my leaves. I would go with Sulfate of Potash next time.
