Do pumpkin roots grow down,,,or do they spread out??Reason I ask,,my best plant is in a bad place,,,its runners will be under a pinetree,,and I was wondering what is the least depth I could till,,cause the tree roots are in there,,but wnat to be sure they go deep enough to grow a nice size pumpkin....Please help me with this question!!!The plant has 3 babies,,,but are on the main stem,,bout 3 ft. from the base of the plant,,is this to close or should I pull them off aand wait for more ??

Roots grow very deep and they do spread out. If you keep the first pumpkin at 3ft if will have a bad impact on the stem as it grows bigger. But if you wait for a better fruit then it will late october before it opens. It's up to you.

In that case cut off the pumpkin at 3ft when you get a nice 4 or 5 lober at 7 to ten feet. As long as it is set by the first few days of next month then you should have a nice pumpkin by Halloween. But provide protection for late frosts.

i live in s.Ga.,,,hehe,,,no frost til end of november,or december,,,,ok,,I'm gonna sound stupid for a second,,what is a nice 4 or 5 lober,,I ve got 3 vines and all of them have at least 3 pumkin babies,,,I will pull them off cause of the distance,,all are on the main vine,,,thought I read in here somewhere that you want your pumpkins on a runner instead of main vine,,is this true???How nice of a pumpkin could I have by halloween????

Same as you could have by the beginning of october, if pollination is soon. In fact, that is what I'm doing. I had to much nitrogen in my soil in early july, all fruit aborted. I watered really well with strait water to leach it out, now I got one to pollinate in the next two days.

you WANT somethign on the main vine, unless a side vined pumpkin is growing better
