How long does potassium stay in the ground when applied? Does it leach like nitrogen?

That depends on soil type & source material applied.
Soluble K such as from Muriate of Potash (0-0-60) will leach on sandy soils at about half the rate of Nitrogen or roughly 8-10 weeks.

Potassium Nitrate will be roughly the same.

Better sources such as Sulfate of Potash may last 2-4 weeks longer & due to the lower salt content can thusly be applied at heavier rates.

Clay soils will leach more slowly.

Availabilty due to unusual Calcium levels might be of concern to some growers too. Soil test lab reports can help you gauge the rates, sources, & frequency quite well.
