I have been putting grass clippings over my vines to help keep them wet, as we have not had rain in a long time. Is this ok? The plants seam to like it!

Be carefull, when grass composts it gets hot. It could cause damage to your vines.

I had a truck load of grass dropped onto my compost pile this spring. When I went to turn it, I almost burned myself. You could see the heat "in the air" just like on a hot highway...

HI Zac:
John is right.I wouldent put anything over the vines except garden dirt.And dont bury vines with stuff that is still composting.I did last year and got vine rot on both my plants.A lesson well learned.Some growers use straw and hay to hold the moisture in the soil and they put it over the entire garden as the plant grows after burying vines with dirt.Hope this helped. you need a big pile of grass clipping before they
get hot from composting.
grass clippings used as mulch to help hold in the
water is fine. I've done this before and it works well.

BUT - you do want to bury your vines so you can
get that extra root growth at the vine/leaf nodes.
