While looking for soil additives I came accoss a Canadian company in Nova Scotia that produces an Ascophyllum kelp product for agricultural purposes. Check out the link and details at http://www.acadianseaplants.com/soilapplication.html

Has anyone tried this product (or similar) and what are some opinions on its use?

We don't have enough good kelp producing "ocean features" ih this area. But I would love to find something like this for sale around here. Have you contacted them about prices?

Fertrell Company and Gardens Alive carry kelp meal. Nearly all organic based inventories now carry kelp meal. One of the best collection areas in America is our far Northeast Coastal areas. Read up on this fine product. I would not use over twenty five pounds per one thousand foot patch per year. Kelp meal is an excellent additive for your package of fertilization, mineralization and biological support.

Not sure about Canada..I get my kelp meal from North American Kelp out of Maine. A 50 pound bag is $34.66, which includes delivery. I spread a 50 pound bag around my 6 planting sites every year..Joe P.

Fertrell's suggested retail on a 50 lb. bag is $30.00. Looks like we have an average by looking at all the posts.
I have several application rates by various opinions of up to twenty five pounds on a thousand square feet. It will take more than one year to achieve the maximum benefits of adding any new organic product to your bag of tricks. Maximum benefit should be in place and supporting your patch within three years.

I usually get 80lbs of kelp meal through a local nursery for around 60 bucks, it's expensive but works well, it conatains a lot of micro nutrients and is said to help with fruit wall thickness. Every fruit I've grown, although they
ve been small, have had thick walls and weighed heavy, most notably my 611.5 Hester from 2002 which had 9" thick walls and was estimated at only 85 pounds.

Thanks for the information...indeed is helpful. Looks like it is a product that I should have folded into the patch.

Steve - I'll let you know regarding price. They even do custom packaging and bulk orders.

Dwaine - thanks for the suggested application rate, just what I needed.

Joe - will check out supplier you mentioned. Is that 50 lbs per site or the entire patch?

Pete - will check that out too.

Tom - wall thickness is what we are after so thanks for the info.

I used kelp meal this year. Not convinced it did much, but I am gonna use it again. Smells like the ocean...and since I dont get to go on vacations, its a welcomed smell.

Check out North Country Organics,they have anything you need at lower prices. I have been using them for about 12 years. Powdered seaweed for about 40$ that makes 5 gallons. 50# of crab shell for about 20$ and if my memory is right, 50# of kelp for about 40$.

All I can say is that it makes the leaves look like they have a big hard-on the next day.
