Hello everyone,
Great message board!
I live in western KY and hope to grow some big pumpkins next year. Nothing to big like some of you! Just something to WOW people and for my kids to get into growing plants.
Anyway, I have about 1 acre of river bottom land cleared out for planting next year with a slough along side the area. I'm trying to figure out a way to use a solar array and battery bank to pump water to a sprinkler system. I've got the system figured out, or at least I think so, except for the pump itself. I can "float" the pump or intake up off the bottom of the slough and screen out the larger debris and run 120 volt AC via an inverter. I'm looking for something like an impact sprinkler for overhead watering other vegetables like Indian corn but could run dip to the pumpkins if that is better. I also have a timer for schedule the watering.

I want to try to set it up this year to prove it will work before going to all the trouble next year just to fail from lack of water. The property is 45 minutes away and I'll only get there on weekends.

Thanks in advance,
ctf58

Maybe look in to semi-trash water pumps to handle the debris in the water you would be pumping.

You said you could screen out the larger debris but even small debris will clog a sprinkler head and forget about drip unless you are going to use something like an inline cartridge filter.

Take a 5 gal bucket, cut sits in the side wrap a fine mesh screen around and you can pump water out of that should help. To help keep screen from getting plugged put a larger wire screen mesh 6 to 8 inches out around bucket

ctf58, curious as to where in western KY, you are...I live near Owensboro, and would like to help w/your project for next year. Your story does not sound like an adventure for major success, but don't let that statement deter you from your goal! Atlantic Giant Pumpkins, are an exceptional breed of plants that require/demand almost daily attention. My best advice for you, for this year, is to come to Robert's Family Farm on 9/16 to the KGPG weighoff, talk to people & sorta figure stuff out a bit! Peace, Wayne
email me at ... wsmpeace at bellsouth dot net & I will try and help as much as I can!!
