What dose carbon do for plants? Should I add some wood ashes to the patch?

Also, How should I make Seaweed emulsion? I have kelp powder, 50 pounds, and I am using 40 pounds in the patch, and garden. I want to use the other ten pounds for a kelp tea, how should I make this? I have been told like 2 tablespoons/gal aerated with some source of carbs for them, can I use that straight, or dilute it?
