Thanks to a friend from across the ocean I'm going to try growing Kelsae onions this year. Now I got a late start & just started the seeds Saturday evening. We don't get a killing frost in Central Ohio until mid Oct., so will the 7 months between now & then give me enough time to get some good size onions.
I'm thinking with the help of a turkey deep fryer I can make some monster blooming onions.
Also, any growing tips would be greatly appreciated....Paul

Water from the bottom...moist not wet...I have problems with onions damping off easily.

Check out http://www.dixondalefarms.com/ they have a lot of good info.

The bigger the plants are early in the year the bigger the onions will be.... Onions start to bulb according to the day length... In Ohio you should grow long day Onions. Once they start to bulb the plant will start focusing its energy into the bulb. Thus the bulb size is determined by plant size when bulbing starts. Proper watering is also important.

You are behind but you will still get some nice onions. Next year start them around Xmas. I have some growing in the basement under lights. They are about 15 inches tall at this point. I will now prune them so that they are about 6 inches tall. Once you get them to that size just keep pruning the tallest leaf each time you see a new one coming. They can get pretty big, up to around 5 pounds with a little help and luck. I had one made into a blooming onion last year at the Outback. It was really good. You will have to take it the day before you eat there as they soak it in water overnight.
