I'm looking for a good slug bait that would be safe to use with my dog in the yard. I know the eggshells idea but my dog is half beagle & half black&tan coon hound so he would track that down & be into it in no time at all.
Thanks.........Paul

I usually use slug bait with the active ingredient "Methiocarb" or "Metaldehyd" but I understand they are rather harsh chemicals and not what you are looking for here.

But we also have available a product with the active ingredient "Iron-III-Phosphate" (Eisen-III-Phosphat) and it is declared as absolutely safe for humans and pets as the active ingredient is supposed to be something also occurring in nature. You might want to look for US products with this active ingredient.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys ( I wish I could have a few chickens Shannon). Matfox I do agree with you that Hosta's make great slug bait, but if I keep my wife a nice flower bed that she can get cut flowers from all summer it helps her put up with my obsession to grow giant pumpkins & 'maters.
I'm sure some of you can understand where I'm coming from.
Thanks again.....Paul

Bury some shallow dishes among the Hostas so the brim is just about even with the soil. Fill them with stale beer. Slugs like beer, stop to drink, fall in & drown.

If your dog is anything like our Boxer, the worst thing that'll happen is a swagger & beer/slug breath.

I always use SLUGGO OR ESCARGO. Both work as good as any other bait and killer. Neither contain anything that will hurt the children, pets or patch. It costs more or less the same as the chemicals which may be undesirable. When it biodegrades it leaves you with a small amount of available nitrogen.

How it works: The slugs eat it and get a sick belly full. They stop eating and die of starvation.

The beer pan works too but SLUGGO AND ESCARGO work so good I no longer waste any beer. It is in pellet form. You apply it until it stops being eaten. You will see near perfect control, in one day or two. Slug damage is history, in my patch using this product.
